Found one locally for a pretty nice price.. 5.7L TBI/700R4, it's supposed to have 117K on it and be a two owner vehicle..

What do these have under them as far as t-case usually? Do the '91s have a 6 digit odometer? What about fuel mileage? I get 13-15 in the Ranger right now but being able to drive a K5 would be worth a slight hit(12-14 or so).

T-case is an NP241, probably has 3.42 gears. Lots of neat things in the 87-91 years- tbi of course; 90/91 had electric speedo; 89/91 may have electric mirrors & 90/91 shoulder belts on rear seat.

Should have a 6digit odo, and you would get anywhere from 11-15 mpg depending on gearing, tire size and driving style as well as engine shape.

Tranny will be the 4L60E, not 700R4. Check the RPO sticker in the glove box for the code.

Yeah, it will be a 4l60e, but there really isnt any difference between that and the 700r4. I lost 2 cars in my divorce and was forced into driving my '91 K5 as dd. (She didn't get that, HA!) I was getting 9-10 in town, and around 12-13 on the highway. I'm the only owner, it has 179,000 or so miles, and my original window sticker says 11/13.

Hope that helps.

I ended up buying a new '08 Impala, which is 21/29, I'm actually making money driving it versus driving my K5 everyday.

My commute to school is 10 miles city/country road, 20 miles highway.... so if I figure using your estimate(and being conservative) I'd be doing about $48 a week in commuting to school and back versus about $36 a week for the Ranger.

Still weighing it.. the cost would be more but at the same time it'd be something I'd love to drive :dunno:

Again, the 700R4 and 4L60 are identical, the 4L60E is electronically controlled rather than using a TV cable.

We had a '91 K5 Suburban that had a 4L60E but they are apparently super rare, the 4L60E didn't start for most trucks until '93 or so.

Ditto

700r4 and 4L60 are basically the same trans, they just changed the name.
4L60 and 4L60E are different!

The 4L60E did not come out until late 93, it is very simlar to a 700-R4 as in all the hard parts are the same but the valve body is different so is the case. If you have an electric trans prior to 93 it may be a 4L80E the heavy duty overdrive or it was swapped in

The 4L80E did come in square body 91's but only 2500 and bigger.

Back to the original question......

I used to DD my 91 K5. I got like 15+ mpg. 31's and 3.08 stock gearing. TBI is great and so is OD. I have heard that the ones with A/C, had really cold A/C.
I don't know what it would get now and I may not want to with the 5.38 gears and all the extra stuff it has.

I doubt you will see much of a diference in gas milage between your Ranger and A TBI Blazer. As long as the Blazer is in good tune.
Rangers get crappy milage for a V6. TBI Blazers get good milage for a V8.
The problem is keeping your foot out of it. V8s have a better fun factor than a V6.
If you keep the K5 stock, Use middle grade gas, and drive half way sane you should get 12- 14 MPG average City 16-18 highway depending on how fast you drive..
I get an easy 18 MPG on the highway if i go slow at 65. Thats with a lift, lockers, and 33s

Thats been my justification too.... really have to put your foot in it on the Ranger to get up to merging speeds sometimes

I've thought about going to a car but I tried the compact fwd thing.. not going to happen :D

Figure keep it stock, drive it easy. The ad disappeared off CL today :doah:Going to give the fellow a call tomorrow in case he still has it.

I'm using a 1990 k5 as a daily driver. Mine has 191,000 miles on it, 350 TBI, 700R4, stock t-case, stock gearing 3.08 I think. It does pretty well, when it was on stock tires it got 15 mpg and now with 33's it still gets 11-13 depending on me. I like to play way too much too so i could do better. Other than old seals leaking I don't have any problems even on long trips. I guess one thing that helps is the previous owners installed custom true dual with no cats.
