Here are pics of my firewall and glove box.
glad i stumbled upon this in your thread.Didn't get much done today because of work but I did install my new battery box on the firewall.
Here's the box, it came from Artec Industries
Here it is mounted to the firewall along with some more undercoat over my hole patches.Now I need new battery cables for the truck and winch.
when you removed the AC box for the flat panels. what thicknes of sheet did you use? any issue with it being sturdy enough to hold up the weight of the optima?
i've been planning on leaving my battery in the rear so i'd have a firm mounting location but leaving it in the engine bay would solve a lot of problems...
I hate to say it but I don't know what gauge stuff I used. I just grabbed some stuff I had in the garage that looked to be the same thickness as the OE sheetmetal.
As for strength, I placed the battery box on the original firewall with some 2"x8"x1/8" backing plates on the inside. The patch panels were very minimal in size, just enough to cover the holes.
I originally I had planned to mount mine in the rear but, like you said, that opens up a can of worms for battery cables, etc. and it just wasn't worth the headache.

Just a quick update -
I haven't spent much time or any money on the K5 lately because I've been working towards having a shop built. We finally got everything finalized and they started last week. It's a pole barn style building that's 18' wide x 36' deep x 14' tall, weather permitting it should be done by the end of next week but it's been raining a lot lately so who know.
(let me know if the pic doesn't show, photobucket is blocked at work so I'm doing this "blind")

I can't wait till it's done and I can work on it inside for a change. I've always worked on it outside in the driveway so I don't mind that but it's a pain having to pull tools out and then put them all back inside. It'll be nice being able to walk away mid job and then be able to pick right up where I left off later.

Thanks guys! I would like to have gone bigger but the slope of the land plus my septic tank field lines forced me to use a narrow strip. I think it'll be good though, if I ever move it'll look like an RV garage.
The kids are happy too, I'm having a small 8'x18' loft built into the back end for them to have as a play room. I plan on putting my tool box, compressor, work benches, etc under the loft (8' ceiling) and keeping the forward 28' or so open for the Blazer.
Maybe now I'll get really motivated and finish up the K5!

Glad to see you are finally moving foreward with this project! 
shops are great for hanging out, looking at ur truck, planning what your gonna do, dreaming of things you wanna do, and occasionally actually working on it.......Sounds like its just what you need!
