Good after noon this is my problem, Truck ran great then it would not run before 10 am after ten fine. It would cough choke run really rough then come out of it, then things went really bad. Have replaced ox sens. coil, map sensor, fuel filter complete tune up, egr valve tests good. Ignition mod new. Now it tries to run when you feather the gas but switches between backfiring through the carb and just not wanting to run. My mechanic said this truck will drive him to drink, and is throwing no codes which he doesn't understand. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Also it is a 92 s-10 2wd 4.3 tbi

Have you plugged a scanner into it to see what it thinks the engine temp is? If the computer thinks that the temp is colder than it really is, it will inject way too much fuel.

Pretty sure the mech didn't check that, i wouldn't know how, right now the thought is the computer control mod since it can mess with timing and we are pretty sure that the distributor system is good

I aagree with Harry check the temp sensor. I know it is not a truck but it is GM. My saturn had the temp sensor go bad and when it fails it fails low and the ecm thinks it is cold. My resistance readings equated to -40 degrees :eek1: . My transmission would also not lock the torque converter because it was still trying to "warm" the engine. I lost about 6 mpg also.

you can either plug a scanner in it and actually read what the ecm thinks the temperature is or get a haynes or chiltons manual for your vehicle. The one for my saturn had a chart that compared resistance to temperature.

Truck ran great when my mom owned it, that was a few months ago. Then it started the not starting in the morning thing, then i took it to a friend so he could take it to his mech. He went to start it and same thing after ten it was fine, took it to the mech he was really busy so it took awhile and he went to start it and it started fine for a few days, this was when temps were above 90 during the day and rarely got below 75/80 at night. Then it cooled down and went to start it and wouldn't start at all sputtering and watching the injectors they weren't spraying fuel. Then it sat about a week he finally got to move it in thinking it would have to be pushed and it fired right up ran great he put about 30 miles on it driving it here and there all good. No codes were being thrown at all he tested all the sensors but the ccm and changed the ignition mod thinking that might be it. Picked it up drove it about 20 miles drove fine then sputtered and died and hasn't really started since, feather the gas and it will try to run but backfires through carb and now today isn't backfiring but still have to feather it to get it to run but put it in gear and it dies. Hope this info might help a bit

I would check the temp sensor also. By the by, Saturns are heavily known for ECTs... my 95's was bad when I bought it. Most service manuals(I don't believe Chiltons or Haynes do but good GM ones or AllData) have reference charts of resistance vs temperature.

also, pull the distributor cap and make sure the shaft bushings are tight, and that the pick-up coil reluctor is not spinning on the shaft, i've seen several doing that with one of these problems, both require a dist. replacement

try checking for electrical shorts in the spark plug wires. You'd be surprised, I had that same problem, it was shorting out by the manifold.

Possible bad ground to the computer. I have had this one and it took 3 mechanics to figure it out. This is the only time I have taken a car to a shop too. It was driving me nuts
