92 s-10 can't figure this one out even the mechanic

It has new plugs, wires, cap & rotor, coil, fuel filter, air filter, map sensor, O2 sensor, exhaust from cat back new less than a year ago. umm I'm sure there is more but :dunno: ????? Thanks for all your help!

also, pull the distributor cap and make sure the shaft bushings are tight, and that the pick-up coil reluctor is not spinning on the shaft, i've seen several doing that with one of these problems, both require a dist. replacement
ahem

That sounds alot like the problems I was having with my wifes 99 S-10
After driving it around for a week with a fuel pressure gauge stuck to the windsheild we were able to trace it down to a faulty fuel pump.

my step sons old s10 ran the same way.

you said the egr test out ok, but is the disc valve still in one piece or broken off?

his tested okay for opening and closing, but upon inspection the valve was broken in half and missing (where it went im clueless).

replace the egr and it ran like a champ again.

My service engine light isnt coming on and has not except when it gets ready to die, could the EGR still be the problem??? Doesn't it throw a code and kick on the SES light???? THANKS

Usually when one backfires through the intake you either have low fuel pressure or the timming is off (not always though). I would run a fuel pressure gauge on it first. If that's not it i think I would bypass the est like you are setting the timing and see if it stabilizes. GM's are fairly bad about the est modules acting up and retarding the timing to the point that it runs like crap and has no power or starts backfiring through the intake.

my mechanic is officially drinking now

Good morning, I just want to thank you all for all the good ideas!! This is the plan so far. Last sunday we changed the computer control module. It didn't work. So we are going to: check the distributor stuff first, the guy helping me is just a little worried about making the timing worse by taking the dist. out. I don't know how that could happen but he's a nice guy just for helping! So after that we bought a new EGR valve and that is plan B, then on to the fuel system! My mechanic said he checked all of the sensors including the coolant temp sensor so we are going to start heading towards areas he didn't check ;) If all of these things don't work, then going to start retesting all the sensors we haven't replaced. Any more ideas would be greatly appreciated because so far we have several mechanics scratching their heads while they sit around with a drink in their hand. Thanks again!! :D

fuel distribution device...

If its a V6 4.3. litre,it might be a faulty fuel distribution device(some mechanics call it a "spider" because it has 6 hoses coming out of it,and looks like a spider!)...its about 400 bucks from a dealer :eek1: --they go bad quite often, and they are a pain to replace--they are located UNDER the intake plenum in the lifter galley..we usually save any we can from vehicle thats being junked,so we can "test" it by swapping the "good used" one in ,rather than spend that much to find out something else was the problem..

Symptoms range from surging, stalling, running like a plug is fouled, loading up,black smoke,etc..but EGR valves are noted for causing similar symptoms too--make sure if you remove the EGR to see if its passages in the engine aren't plugged with carbon chunks--we've seen lots of that on 4.3's too...good luck..

he said it was TBI, not CPI(w/"spider")

Sorry!

I'm sorry,I only related what I have seen at a friends shop on many 4.3's..I'm not that familiar with fuel injection yet-I havent owend a vehicle with it,other than my ford contour!..Thought it might have been his problem..--TBI,CFI--so far,I'm glad I still have carburetors!..I'm about 15 years behind the times.. :doah: --now I have to learn all the "new" stuff, and forget about points,dwell,carbs,.. sigh!..
