damn oil leaks
so i've been battling the oil filter adapter leaks on this motor for a few days now but haven't given up.
it all started with having to switch out the little piece that the filter and cooling lines attach to because the donor motor was not equipped with cooling lines therefore had no place for the lines to attach.
the gasket was basically destroyed from removing the adapter, and i was too lazy to go and get a new at the time so i went ahead and bolted it up, started the motor, and what a surprise it leaks around the two bolts that hold it to the motor. so that one was my own stupidity for not getting a new gasket.
so i get the entire gasket set for this adapter for about $10 it included two different style paper gaskets, one large orange o-ring, two small line o-rings, and two medium sized o-rings and i wasn't quite sure where those two went, but anyway moving on.
i pulled the adapter back off installed the new paper gasket and of course assumed the original large orange o-ring would hold up because it had been up to this point. i did however add some washers to the bolts and hi-temp silicone around the washers. got it all bolted up again and started the motor and again oil coming out, this time from around the top of the adapter but not from the bolts, so i solved one leak but created another
so once again pulled off the adapter but this time disconnected the cooling lines from the adapter (those little quick connectors) in order to be sure that the new large orange o-ring i was going to install was fully seated in the groove before bolting it up and added some hi-temp silicone gasket maker both in the groove and on top of the o-ring itself.
again bolted it back up and started the motor this time oil was pouring out of the upper inlet line that i had just removed and reinstalled, prior to this i had never had a leak out of these lines for the entire time i've owned this former Blazer and they don't look to have been replaced before i bought it so it appears that just simply breaking the nearly 20 year old seal that this line had was enough to cause it to not reseal itself even though nothing was altered in or around the fitting.
so i'm going to try some new lines and seals tomorrow and see if they solve this problem for good. i just thought it was funny how it all kinda snowballed into a different problem and moved from one section to another.
