It's not to often that you see any of that bodystyle van around, let alone in that great of shape. Truck looks cool as hell :waytogo:.

The '93
The govt ordered it from GM sent it down to Armor-Tec in Texas bullet res glass steel plates in the walls ( found that out when i pulled the carpet off the walls and 3/8 A-R plate fell out..that plate at the scrap yard paid for the interior ), then up to salt lake city to Advanced 4 wheel sys for a 1 ton GMC front end and gave it to the Cuban Diplomats in Miami for 3 yrs then the Nevada state maintenance sys got it to look for oil in Elco Nev. then the Utah Olympics took it and put 10k in the appulistry paint and drive line, 4 mos after that i got it in a auction for 12.5k

'93 G30 454 4X4 EXT, 4l80E, np205, 4-56 spicers in a Dana ft & GM Corp rear, Bilstien 5100's, BFG 315/75/16, 146" wheelbase. I'd love to convert my '81 G-10 to 4wd,but its sat so long now its probably too far gone to be worth the effort..(I had considered using my '82 GMC K2500 diesel for a donor, since the body on that is getting punky, but I'm no longer able to tackle that kind of work)..

Here is one factory built Chevy Pathfinder 4x4 van about 60 miles away that I'd love to own,if money were no object..sad to see it sitting in the woods, much like my old G-10 is..

You dont want that one its a rust bucket. If he didnt take care of the body he did less to the frame. What is a "bullit proof factory transfer case" ? A G10 doesnt have enough frame strength to take the articulation that occurs off road. It needs to be at least a G20 full 3/4 ton frame.

I'm pretty sure the chassis on the 80's vintage G vans are the same for 1/2 and 3/4 ton, only a few things were different..
G-30 1 tons were different..(not sure if those were unibody like the smaller tonnage or not,I know most "box" vans had separate frames like a pickup..--one of those would be a better candidate for a 4x4 conversion)

The G-20 vans were still 5 lugs too,but the rear brakes were larger, and they had beefier coils & leafs ,larger ball joints too,and some had steel bushings instead of rubber on the upper a-frames..

I saw a G-10 on "Fast & Loud" being converted to 4wd not long ago--the Gas Monkeys bought a decent looking 4x4 pickup for 3500 bucks, and proceeded to carve it up,and junk everything they didn't need...(I would have just kept the truck!)..

I think my van is beyond any hopes of ever being converted now,in fact it'll be a fair bet it is no longer worth the labor and expense it'll need to just make it driveable again,period..:(...right now its being used as a storage bin more than anything...sucks ,because I had it in decent shape and drove it everywhere before I parked in November of '03,and like it a lot...it'd need a rear spring or main leaf on one side, master cylinder, brake lines, and more body work...I've owned it since 1990!..:eek1:

The G20 had 5 lug, unless you got the 3/4 ton package. Then it went to 8 lug & the heavy frame thats inlaid into the uni-body, most chevy vans are uni-body. Both of my 1 ton vans are uni-body. The only vans that I know had a "frame" were Fords & Dodge, maybe the old chevy's ('80 or older) had a frame. Not sure there.

They were all unibody from '71 when they switched to the "new" style G series..except for 80's G-30 "box" vans, those had a full frame, very similar to a 1 ton pickup..

The G-20's that were 5 and 8 lug might have had thicker unibody rails than the G-10's did..don't know for sure..

I swapped a 2.73 rear axle into my '81 when the original 10 bolt chowed the side gear and let the gear flop around in the diff case..it had 3:08's originally...it really killed the acceleration, but it can go 80+ in second gear now..:D..and it gained a few mpg on highway trips..but I wished I'd have chosen the 3:42 ratio axle I could have bought at the same salvage yard..
The '73 307 it now has actually has less HP than the camel humper 250 six I yanked out for no good reason...

The "new" axle was from a '79 G-20 and I found out it had 11-5/32" x 2.5" brakes .slightly larger than the 11 x 2" original G-10 axle had,and supposedly the rear axle bearings and shafts are slightly larger diameter, but I bet they were identical..parts books list 2 choices of axle shafts ,seals and bearings..

My van has manual brakes too, probably the only one GM sold without power brakes..I've looked up a new master cylinder and they are getting scarce and the cheapest one is about 75 bucks..:eek1:..

My dad had a 99 gmc 1 ton extended van for work and I'm pretty sure it had a full frame. Course that was the new body style so that might be a reason for it too.

Very cool. And cool you know the history of it. We had a 4x4 van growing up and its still running around town

I have seen G-30 box or "cube" vans as old as my van is ('82) that had the full frame, ones older than that were unibody--the ones newer with the newer body style all have full frames I'm pretty sure,at least all the ones in salvage yards I have looked at did..

I'd love to find an old Divco or IHC Metro step van or "milk truck" from the 50's and make it 4wd...guy I know had a '60 GMC aluminum step van he put a 4x4 chassis under,he lifted it just enough to fit 35" tires,he used a '78 F-250 chassis he had from a rotted pickup..divorced NP-205,460 Ford motor,4 speed...he buffed that thing till it shined like a mirror,it looked very cool..
