I got my eye on one of these, 200K miles, $3k. Only year for a Vortec 2dr? Gas mileage reports online are only 14-16, I thought the Vortecs did much better. Heck my '83 K5 gets 10-12, not that much worse. What else about these '90s era can you tell me?

Nope, the late 90's got about that in mpg's, pretty standard. The vortec 350's of those years had a common problem with the factory intake gasket going out. I would assume with 200k miles that it's been changed out for a better one already though. If it has push button electronic 4x4, the solenoids on the front axle that engage and did-engage 4x4 tend to go out quite often. The bushings in the doors go out a bunch (but those are pretty easy to change). Other than that, great rigs. The drivetrain of those years are pretty good as long as they've been maintained well. Plus, I've always liked the 2dr tahoes. One of these days I may look to pick one up as a daily driver

They made 2 doors Vortecs 96-99, so not real rare. Intake gaskets, fuel spider, EGR valve, depending what push button you have the motor on the t-case goes bad. IMO, nothing to worry about. I had 4 of these, 1st being a 92 2-door. Had 2 4-doors, have one 4-door now that I building. Finally got it running, just need to get a tranny, and fix a brake line. I love these body styles, 2 or 4 door. I like the 4s cause there is more room, back seat and cargo. And most parts interchange with trucks.

I had a 97 GMC Yukon 2 door...
350 Vortec 4x4...took delivery of it the day it rolled off the trailer.

Biggest POS on the planet.

Within 40k miles... Intake gaskets leaked,,fuel pump in tank failed,,steering sensor failed,,fuel regulator failed,,rear u-joint failed,, solenoid valve in the trans failed,,3 batteries failed,,front dif solenoid failed...elastic on sunvisors stretched out..

I could go on and on about trim issues, interior issues... fit and finish etc..

$48k truck brand new...I had such high hopes that this was a quality product from GMC...
turns out it was a pile...and I was never so glad to get rid of it...and will never buy another new Chevrolet product again.

Id say you got a lemon. Last tahoe I had had almost 260k on it. Original motor and tranny. Only reason I sold it was to get the yukon I have now. I've had cars that had nothing but issues, then get another of the same thing and have absolutely zero issues with it.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah I like the body style too. My wife bought a '96 S10 2wd new. At 72k miles it lost the intake gaskets, warranty ended at 70k and they would not cover it. Fuel pump went out at 140k, other than that it has been reliable but as mentioned pieces of plastic interior broke of regularly.

What I should get is a (relatively) good gas mileage 4wd something or other to take to the cabin on days that I don't need to haul stuff, and keep my K5 for hauling, towing. Lots of used SUVs around here that have never seen dirt, but almost all are 4 doors, which I don't need.

Don't need or don't want?
I love my 97 s15 Jimmy and it's a 4 door.
I don't need it but I got a great deal on it with only 85k original miles and I get great mileage compared to my 89 suburban and on a few occasions the extra doors came in handy.

I had a 93 two door in high school so I've always had a soft spot for them. Now I have a 97 two door which I've put a fair amount of work into over the last coupe years.
