My cousin has a 2004 Chevy Silverado 2500 and started finding oil on his garage floor near the rear axle. His dealer found that the lower clamp at the spring U-bolts is holding water and rusted through his axle tube! This is clearly a crappy design cause this lower clamp has no drains. I checked mine (2001 GMC) and mine are packed full of dirt and road crap. I was able to get them off and drilled 1/2 holes in the bottom on each side. I painted them with POR-15 and put them back on.
 
my 95 burb had the same problem, the bottom side of the tube was weakened, and as I tightened the u bolts the axle tube started to collapse...real nice.
 
That's been a problem since the 88+ trucks also.

Just we the other day ORD has a kit to fix it permanently
 
Yep - the 14bsf axle I got was rusted pretty bad under those brackets. Luckily not enough to weaken it much though.
