My buddies 1999 Tahoe with push button auto 4x4 and a 4l60e with a 350 was brought to the shop today for what he thought was a bad t-case bearing. The shop told him that he was on borrowed time in 2wd and that 4x4 wasn't engaging properly. He thinks his 4x4 actually does engage, but I'm not sitting in the truck so I can't verify that.
The shop recommended finding a reman t-case or finding a good used t-case.
Unfortunately I'm out of school for the summer and won't be around to tear into it and really find out whats wrong. I know there is a lot of audible noise from the truck, but not much more.
He has very limited mechanical skills. I'd love to see him try to tackle the job, but I don't think that is in the cards, so...
1) Should he find a used t-case or reman? And, what should he pay?
2) What model years of trucks and what specific t-case does he need to look for to find a used t-case?
3) Why isn't the shop changing out the bearing? (A question he should have asked)
4) What else do we need to know?
