So a trailer tow hitch is needed.

Under the bumper like a normal rig that will drag on stuff but probably give better handling of the trailer???? Possibly?

The hitch mounted behind the bumper with some kind of flip up licence plate, or removable lic. plate??

With maybe something like this.

Also, does anybody actually know about the laws on brake lights. I'm kind of holding back on welding in the tire carrier spindle as it will hide the bottom portion of the pass side brake light. I'm pretty sure that I may need an inspection at some point to get this back on the road and I hate to cut that thing off, as It's going to be a huge pain to install inside of the hidden tube bumper in the first place. I have heard that as long as 50% of the light is still showing, it's still good to go, but I really don't know.

Thanks-

No idea about the law, but I have the same question and even have the parts to do it. I suspect the law says the lights have to give off "X" number of lumens from "X" distance away. But you aren't forced to be brighter than they were in 1969. You might just put in some brighter LED bulbs and be fine.

Either you block the tailgate or the taillight. Plan was to put the hinge just below the taillight , but that was more for aesthetic reasons than "law". You could also make the hitch removable for inspections etc.

I also like my flip up license plate mount. It's perfect for hiding the hitch.

Yeah, On our rigs, at least with the stock bumpers there's only one place to put it and that is guaranteed covering at least the bottom third, to half of the light itself. Unless I can find something definitive on that, I'll probably not even worry about the tire carrier and spindle now. It's always something I can do after I get it tagged again.

I would like to at least fab up and weld in for the tow hitch now. I always have trailers of some sort behind my rigs. Where do you have your's mounted Brian? Under the bumper, or through? The through would be hidden with the removable tow hitch and the plate would cover the hole.

Unless you are changing the status from from wrecked to salvaged I dont think you'll have an inspection. Pretty sure there is no inspection from non-op to op status. I dont know what happens if you havent registered in years though.

Also, if there is brake light inspection, I would get those round tail lights and just temp mount to tabs on your tire carrier. Then grind them off after.

I have a hitch behind my license plate and have used it for light duty tows. It's nice to have. Currently I just remove the plate, but flip up would be nice.

Well, I kinda screwed up on the entire Cali thing when I started this. I had never heard of a non-op in my life till this thing was sitting in the garage for 3 or so years. Last I checked it was something like 700 to register it. I'm sure it's a ton more now, but I also have heard of some kind of Cali 7 year drop off the radar thing from several people. If that's true, I should be good to go. But, I just don't know if I need an inspection after that?

I dig the extra lights idea. It would be sweet to do this all at once.

This page may help. 4 years and it could be out of the system. That would be sweet. 7 years seems like a safer bet though and no mention of inspections. I think I'd just call and get the details straight from the horses mouth. Hard to find actual details for your exact situation on that in the interwebs.

If you start entering your VIN number and checking, well it might very well end up "reseting" your date.

Also, no inspection for non-op vehicles (or any for that matter) just proof of insurance before they give you a tag.

I think if you slap a "Baby on Board" sign on the back your good to go! :dunno:

It's through the back side of the license plate. The hitch is just one from early classic. There's this weird drippy stuff falling out of the sky right now that makes pictures a bit hard, but here's a shot.

That is a pretty sweet set up. Thanks for posting it.

I ended up getting the entire hidden tube bumper welded up today, except for some kidney shaped end caps. So hopefully I can get it mounted again tomorrow morning and start to figure out the hitch. I bought a receiver last year from tractor supply, but I'll be damned if I know where that thing went. Probably need to buy another one tomorrow.

FWIW the dmv will reduce those fines if you ask.

That would be sweet if they would. But, in the grand scheme of things, I kinda knew this was coming for awhile now. If I need to pay a ton, whatever. That will mean I finally have my rig back on the road and can totally make fun of Greg for having his shit still cluttering up his garage.
