I got my 82 jimmy 5 days ago, as some may remember I traded my Lincoln for it which was an awesome car. I was unsure for a while about my decision until today, this rig had some issues.

I had to drive it home from San Diego (3 hours) with white knuckles the entire way. Major wandering problem. It had a major oil leak, underneath is covered and its dripping on the exhaust and burning up. And it idled pretty rough. I thought I had been suckered into a crappy deal.

I work 12-14 hours a day and hadnt had time to look at it the way I wanted to until today.

1. Wandering- I checked the driver side suspension, turns out 5 of 6 lugs were loose on the wheel- fixed 90% of wandering problem.

2. Idle problem- the PCV has a "nipple" on top that didnt have a cover on it. Plugged it up and now it purrs like a kitten.

3. Oil leak- After a lot of looking it turns out the filter wasnt on all the way... and both valve covers were loose. Dont know the torque specs on the valve covers, but you shouldnt be able to turn the bolts with your fingers.

I am a novice gear head, and because of this site I knew where to look and what to look for.

THANK YOU ALL for helping me fall in love with this truck!

Good work man!

Not positive on the carb versions, but the PCV hooks to the throttle body on the TBI ones. Plugging it isn't the right fix, go to a parts store, and they should be able to help you out.

Besides that, check that the lug holes in that wheel aren't egg shaped now. I'm guessing they are, and it may be time for new wheels.
Good work on the fixes!

And it's only begun...the tech help you'll get here is nearly limitless. Glad you found several very simple problems! I see a common theme, which is not tightening things properly. You'd do well to spend some wrnech time with your truck and double check what else the previous owner forgot to tighten down correctly!

Check all the lug nuts, Check U-bolts if any suspension work was done. Steering box bolts like to loosen anyways, so check them too. Don't forget the loose nut behind the wheel. :D

If you have time, take your rig to the auto hobby shop on base and do a "Harley check". Make sure everything is tightened the way it should. They have all of the tools you'll need. All you need to do is rent a stall. It's cheap.
