Can anyone think of a reason this would happen? It turns off in heat mode.

If I remember correctly, there is a switch mounted on the slide control that cuts the AC compressor off in some positions. Could be it is broken, loose, or ?????.

I've been looking over the wiring diagrams and I can't see any way this could happen except for the control unit itself is malfunctioning. I guess I'll have to pull it out and see if I can see anything.

Check this switch.

Exactly right! I pulled it all apart last night and that switch was melted inside around the vent location. I started to try and fix it with a dremel tool and some plastic weld stuff, but then I found that switch on Rockauto for $20 and just went that way. Besides, the little center clip cracked when I took it apart...
