A few UAV spy shots: updated 9/19/05 at the bottom

Oh well, there is always someone who just must make that kind of comment. Hmmm, lets see...

I haven't seen it in a while, but it was getting pretty thrashed. I don't think there was a "nice" panel left on it. So no huge loss I think.

And, with a $100 (or even $1000) donor, what have you got? A beat/unknown motor and drivetrain, rusty frame with potential problems, 1/2 ton open axles, unknown/faulty wiring, and basically a bunch of stock stuff that's worn out. So, he would have to deal with the frame, find/fix/build motor and drivetrain including another doubler, find/fix/build/regear/lock 1 ton axles, new seats/harnesses/etc., shocks, springs, drive shafts, and another couple of grand in incedentals plus a LOT MORE work on top of that just to get back to where he is now. For all that effort, he now has 2 complete off-road rigs, one that is beat and no longer needed (especially with the new tow rig) and another that he will be using.

What would be the point? And I don't think there would be much point in swapping the new donor drivetrain (in $1000 donor condition no less) into a relatively thrashed body to sell, do you? Even if he sold of the UAV as is, and even if we assume higher than real value due to exposure, he would still be way in the hole not to mention months behind the current schedule.

People get so bent out of shape over stuff like this, but it's just evolution. Oh well, I got "hate mail" when I carved up my M1008 and I guess it's only to be expected with a vehicle that was as visible/popular as the UAV. :D Relax, it is and always has been what Steve wanted when he wanted it. This will kick but and take him to new heights, I only wish I had the resources to do some of the same things at the same pace… I'm green with envy!

Basicly what BadDog said, the body was thrashed already, keep in mind that K5's in general are not worth that much, in fact I could have bought a 91 California body, in show room condition for 500.00, cheaper than fixing a door ding. :eek1:
I didn't have the room or time for another rig and swap junk around, not worth the hasstle, keep in mind most people don't go from wheeling one time to then buying a rock buggy, it is a process that happens over time, and it was time to move on.

Are you sure it's Evolution and not Intelligent Design? ;)

Sorry, couldn't resist...

That'll just be one more forum to give you headaches. We already have a hardcore forum here, "Center Of Gravity" I believe that this could fall under the "extreme body mods" category. :wink1:
Except that it has been locked for some time now.

Sorry, should have said closed to NEW threads. Then again, I bet Steve could get around that :D

Anyone can "get around that". It was closed to new threads because we decided to "tighten up" the content. Too many people were putting relatively mundane stuff in there, then getting bent out of shape if it got moved. I got tired of dealing with "internet lawyers" who wanted to respond with "well *that* thread didn't get move, so why mine?" Existing threads were sort of "grand fathered", but new ones only get moved in when they have valid technical merit based on CoG's charter. Members can PM or "notify" on any thread they think belongs, and we'll then decide when/if to move it in there...

BD, hope you were not offended, didn't mean to question the policy.

I hate to keep going OT, but no offense at all. Just figured I would explain things again since some people missed the original explanations. Now back to topic... :D

A few more from this weekend, ORD modified my old crossmember and tied it into the rear link crossmember with better support.
I swapped out the motor mounts as one was messed up bad and switched to ORD competition style, a real pain with the front crossmember that ran directly under the bolts.
Will now be able to access the drivetrain from top side. :D
Also, ORD now has the axle bridge finished.

Also, notice the frame stiffners where the t-case cross member tie in.
