Oh well, there is always someone who just must make that kind of comment. Hmmm, lets see...
I haven't seen it in a while, but it was getting pretty thrashed. I don't think there was a "nice" panel left on it. So no huge loss I think.
And, with a $100 (or even $1000) donor, what have you got? A beat/unknown motor and drivetrain, rusty frame with potential problems, 1/2 ton open axles, unknown/faulty wiring, and basically a bunch of stock stuff that's worn out. So, he would have to deal with the frame, find/fix/build motor and drivetrain including another doubler, find/fix/build/regear/lock 1 ton axles, new seats/harnesses/etc., shocks, springs, drive shafts, and another couple of grand in incedentals plus a LOT MORE work on top of that just to get back to where he is now. For all that effort, he now has 2 complete off-road rigs, one that is beat and no longer needed (especially with the new tow rig) and another that he will be using.
What would be the point? And I don't think there would be much point in swapping the new donor drivetrain (in $1000 donor condition no less) into a relatively thrashed body to sell, do you? Even if he sold of the UAV as is, and even if we assume higher than real value due to exposure, he would still be way in the hole not to mention months behind the current schedule.
People get so bent out of shape over stuff like this, but it's just evolution. Oh well, I got "hate mail" when I carved up my M1008 and I guess it's only to be expected with a vehicle that was as visible/popular as the UAV.
Relax, it is and always has been what Steve wanted when he wanted it. This will kick but and take him to new heights, I only wish I had the resources to do some of the same things at the same pace… I'm green with envy!
