I am replacing the side bearings on my 14 bolt and I marked the spot where the collars are centered before I removed anything. I put the new bearings on (national, the previous were timken) and the the marks won't quite reach. What I mean is, to get the markings to line up again, I would have to tighten the collars more, but they are already snug and I am not sure how much force to put on them...snug, or more?

From my original markings, I backed off one slot on each collar, so it is "off" by the same amount...is what I am experiencing normal? I consulted the 14bff bible but it isn't too clear on this. I have yet to get a gear pattern because I am unsure if I should proceed...any advice?

With new bearings they're going to be tighter and need more preload. I would keep going until you get it back in the right place so it doesn't mess with your backlash or gear pattern. New bearings can be pretty tight

Those are called carrier bearings

Set the backlash first. You are going to have to have a dial indicator to do this. This is pretty important. Although where you have it set now will probably be very close.

Then tighten them as much as you possibly can with any assortment of tools you can find, just tighten them an equal amount

With everything tightened in place, the backlash is at 0.006, which is within ideal spec. I did get the collars back to the previous setting as well. Thanks to all three of you!

Gear pattern coming soon...
