A little progress

Boy, I like your play-by-play on your progress!

Good, cause sometimes I think maybe I over do it - but I like to share my excitement! ;)

Got the starter installed last night and tried to start the truck but it wouldn't fire. Finallly unhooked the hot lead in the new HEI wiring harness and attached my old hot lead to the HEI and fired right up.

Here is an updated pic just for makovai of the engine - I'm not a chrome guy but kinda diggin' the K&N air cleaner housing.

I purchased a new set of Corvette 2 1/2" ram horns a couple weeks ago that will go in place of the mismatched manifolds the the odd prior owner had on the K5.

Next I went to work on the interior. Got my rear seat brackets in place to raise the rear of the seat up about 1", then laid the carpet back down and installed the driver's seat. Prior owner had the driver's seat installed with wood blocks to raise the rear of the seat and a total of four bolts for the whole seat. Needless to say, it was wrongly installed then and properly installed now.

As you look at the seats, envision some nice seat covers instead of what you are seeing - have a set to put on once I get done.

Next up, finish power steering and hopefully go for another test drive!

Ended up having some hot start problems with the new starter I bought.
Pulled the 5-6 day old starter yesterday morning before I loaded the kids up to take to school. Picked up a new one and got it installed late last night - works like a champ hot or cold. Definitely can hear it spinning better than the other and has no problems firing the motor when it is hot. Nice to be able to mark that off the fix-it list!

Yesterday morning I got up nice and early and before leaving for work I did a one man install of the hood and loaded up some misc. tools and drove the K5 into town to get it inspected. Presently it has a non-highway title.

On the way I stopped and filled the gas tank up for the first time.

Before stopping for gas I shut the K5 off while driving down the road and what do you know, it wouldn't start. So I flipped it into 3rd gear and let the clutch out to get it running again.

Stopped at an O'Reilly's and they confirmed that the alternator was charging. Hmm, didn't want to risk shutting the truck off at the inspection place so I stopped by work and recruited a co-worker to ride with me to the inspection place and sit in the K5 while I went inside to get the process going.

The K5 passed the inspection without incident, but that's not saying much, all the inspector did was look at the Vin on the door jam and on the frame. No inspection of the lights, turn signals, horn . . . or the puddle of gas that was dripping from my gas tank :eek1:

About 2 years ago when I started trying to get the K5 driveable I took the tank and had it cleaned and sealed. Well, looks like they did the cleaning part but failed miserably on sealing it - there are at least 3 nice pinhole leaks and at least one other seeping leak. Grrr  Called the place that did the job and what do you know, number no longer in service.

So I drive home rather than to my office and spend the next hour or so siphoning gas so I wasn't wasting $2.59 per gallon gas.

Later that evening I got the rest of the gas out and pulled the tank. It is now at a more reputable shop getting repaired.

Before I pulled the tank I got the K5 good and warm in the shop and turned the motor off and it fired up each time. Was running a little rough so I messed with the timing a little and got it smoothed out and it starts easier now.

Have to keep an eye on this starter issue.

Took a coupel pics of the K5 with the hood back on (has been off for a year) but of course I forgot the camera so no pics today :D

Yep, the battery cables are new, the battery is new and clean, ground is good. Eager to get the tank back and get the K5 tagged and start driving it. The hot start issue has me confused but I'll see if adjusting the timing a little straightens the issue out.

Thanks for the e-mail - your bikini top will be going to the upholstery shop in the next few days to be used as the pattern! If your wife looks over your shoulder and reads this, will she be understanding of the fact that you own a bikini top? :haha:

No new progress but here are the pics of the hood reinstalled Monday morning before going to get the K5 inspected. Its been off for a year so great to get it reinstalled.

That's an understatement! The grunge on the hood is so bad that 3 years ago when I got the K5 and had it on a trailer at a car wash, the grunge wouldn't come off. May need some Brilo pads to get it grungefree. :D

Just talked to the guy trying to repair the tank and he said the last guy did such a crappy job there was no way he could repair the tank. So, a waste of money to the first guy and now I have to go buy a new tank, oh well, it's only money!!!!

After talking with the repair guy, I went to a meeting and when it was over I jumped in my car, jetted over to a local supplier and picked up a new tank.

Then I took the new tank back to the radiator shop and he will make the necessary mods. Here are a couple pics of the new and old tank - looks like the neck on this one is actually in the right position, just obviously not the proper neck. Radiator guy said he ought to have that taken care of by tomorrow!!! Did I mention the radiator shop guy, Ed, has a 67-72 GMC long wheelbase step sitting right in front of his shop. That's a good sign in my book!

Well I can't see your pics but I'm sure it is my work's firewall that is blocking the site were you keep your pics stored...I can see your pics only from home :doah:

Sounds like you will be leak free soon! :D

Thats a better tank. I'm sure a rubber hose would work on that one. The other aftermarket tanks like mine aim directly into a body mount.

Turns out 2wdBlazer you are right. I had the radiator repair shop transfer my old neck onto the new tank. Looked like correct placement but when I went to install the tank it was hitting the body mount. Ended up hacksawing off the newly installed neck using a short piece of rubber fuel hose to change the placement of the turn of the neck and now she fits! Got it installed yesterday. Took a spin around the block and everything is good. Looks like the new starter and a slight timing adjustment have my hot start problem put to bed too!

With any luck I will drive the kids to school in the K5 Monday and then to work. Still little odds and ends to do but definitely getting there!
