After reading about which case is strong (And not wanting to hi-jack:rolleyes: ). Would it be possible to run a LowMax in a doubler?
I'm looking to reduce my gearing and I'm already running a 203/205 and was considering a lower gear set in the diffs (4.88 to a 5.86) and was wondering if it would be better to change out the cases instead?

ive been told you can run a lowmax in a doubler application....would be a ton of gear for sure...so that would put you at like 5 to 1 in 4 lo....that would be great gearing for your truck....i would leave the axles alone and do the t=case if it was me....remember when you start getting into the high ratios in your axles the pionion gets preety small...the 513 for a 60 isint even that large so i got to imagine a 5.86 would be a weak point in your drivetrain...just my .02

yes, you can run a lomax in a doubler set up. rgv72blzr is doing that, and i may when i redo mine.

Not really. My 4.88s have a 39-8 tooth count and the 5.86s have a 47-8 tooth count, so I'm assuming the pinon should be about the same.

You'd get roughly
6:1
3:1 and
2:1

Gearing options with a LoMax and a standard 203. Pretty sweet actually....

Qs

I've got a couple of questions about this appication.

1)Will the lower gearing help you keep all four wheels on the ground? :D
2)Are you going to put this in before you are replacing your cab and building your new rollcage? :D

Go Tippy, go go go ...

I hope not!!!:D

No, just looking into the future.
Going to cut the roof off and put in a cage. Might try and save the windshield frame (Pretty bent) and put a convertible frame on.

By all means put some gear to it ! The 203 range box and the girth of the Lomax gear sets are stout - not as much to worry about like some of the 5 to 1 cases out there .

I decided to go with a fair amount of transfercase gear plus fairly steep gears in the diff's. The pinion tooth contact with the Dana 5.86's is still tolerable and reliable.

you could always put smaller tires on it. :D all you guys with tons of money to buy TWO transfer cases make me sick. :mad1:

I look at it this way, you can bolt the lomax in with no special tools. it will give you a lot of different gear choices. right now you have about 52:1. going to 5.86 would give you about 63:1. a low max with your 4.88's would be 79:1.

all those numbers do not account for the torque converter.

decision made. now get off the computer and start cutting the roof off.

Doesn't Wagoner Machine Shop sell a 3:1 gear set for the 203 range box? If so, one could concievably have a 3:1 Lomax doubler with a 3:1 203 range box. :D

WMS is no more...but that same guy is still around...i always forget the name of his new shop. but heard some stuff over on pirate that he's not all that good on Customer Service. so yea, a 3:1 in the 203 & 3:1 lo max would give you a silly 9:1 double lo...but you wouldn't have the gearing options, it would just be 3:1 or 9:1. i'm satisfied with my 2:1, 3:1, and 6:1 with my 203/lo max...so FOR MUD, yes it can be done...& i'll be doing it with 5.86s in the pumpkins & a 700R4 :D

so can i consider myself ---> :pimp: ?

I wanna do it too, cause with the 42's installed, I drop under 100:1 now. :(

Hope they make a kit for the drivers drop soon.
