I have a 84 K5 with a rotton pass side A-pillar. Anyone ever replaced an A-pillar before and have details... i e lessons learned?

I repaired one that was damaged. Had to cut the bad section out and weld in a new piece. I also grafted a '74 windshield frame onto my '81 Jimmy when I did the full convertable conversion. I used some 3/4" thin wall tubing as spigots (and backing for welding) The A pillar is hollow as I'm sure you already know. Spigoting the section with small tubing keeps things aligned, and prevent blowing holes in the welded area.

that's a great tip, rene! thanks! incase I ever roll (meaning, when I roll :( ) I'll know how to fix her up real nice. ;) Hadn't thought of that. Did you put a windshield in for fitment before/during welding, or did you just do some real tight measuring?

What do you mean by "spigoting"???

i think he means take a piece of thin wall 3/4" tubing and put it into the windshield frames so they line up easier.

So it must be inserted and welded like a dowel and used as a guide and stiffener etc. Makes sence.

Yeah, think of it as a dowel...

Both times I measured the windsheild opening carefully and made sure I hit those numbers. The first repair was only to one pillar, pretty idiot proof IMO.

The second one was the whole frame...I have some so-so pic's.

You can see no windshield frame in this pic...

My good friend taking care of some surface rust at the seal area.

Here the new frame is in place, the tubing inside the pillar extends up about 3" and down about 3" and is fairly snug. This keeps the angle right. Right after this pic I triple checked the inside measurement of the winshield opening and tacked it up. I didn't even end up using any body fill on the joint...it feathered out nicely and 'disappeared'.

Well, I got this Blazer about a week ago and the A-pillar is rotton all the way though. I am thinking I am going to have to find a donor (impossible here in Hawaii) and cut the entire pillar out and weld another in. The rest of the Blazer is rust free... thats the funny part!

Anyone know where I can get one? I have called a couple junk yards but they arent too helpful for something like this. I am looking for the passenger side... need the entire pillar from 3" into the roof to the firewall. Thats alloting for a lil extra on either end.

Thanks in advance.

Find somebody parting one out in the classifieds here and ask them if they have a cut off wheel. :D

As easy as that sounds, I am in Hawaii and most of the older vehicles that are parted out here are usually rotton already (muchless finding a truck, blazer or burban of the same body). Most of the vehicles out here are imports....

I will seach the south west and see what I can dig up. I had hope that someone on here had a doner or knew where there was something. I am willing to pay for shipping and labor.

Aloha!

I guarantee there is someone parting something here at CK5 that could help you out. The 'A' pillar is common to the K5, pick-up, Crew Cab, Suburban...

That being said, this isn't the forum for wanted ads, or anything like that.

just a fellow k5 owner looking for assistance.... guess i will look elsewhere.
