In my shop. Doing stuff.
Rant on.

The new blazer is killing me.

So far.......
Radiator
Thermostat and housing
Radiator hoses
Temp gauge
Finally figured out the heating issue was the temp sensor.

Replaced the battery because it would not crank when temps are low.

Replaced started because the bendix would not always engage.

Today the left front brake quit working. Fluid everywhere. Got it to a friends shop by work. Banjo bolt was loose.???? When we pulled the wheel to make bleeding easier, noticed the hub moved 1/4 inch up and down. I left.

He calls to tell me the keeper rings were loose and had cross threaded. Bearings were shot. Probably was the ticking noise that started on my way to work.

He shows up to pick me up. I could hear the ticking was worse. Flex plate is cracked. Made it home, but it is loud now.

And a noise is coming from the left rear brake now.

What heck is up with it??????

Rant off.

Thats old trucks for ya. At some point, you will have replaced everything and you will be good to go!

Dang, sorry about your luck Wade. Seems to be the way I have been going lately. Do you still feel it was worth the purchase price?

Sucks. I can't say it'll get better. Everything on mine has been replaced, but over such a long time that the first things need replacing again by the time I get done. We're all gluttons for DIY-punishment. You just got the perfect storm sounds like.

Sucks when something like a flex plate fails ,and its most likely to happen when its about to get cold or snow and you need the truck the most too..
My luck runs that way,I never seem to get the easy fixes like brakes or exhaust ,its always something big, involved to change, and difficult..like a tranny or engine dying just before I need the truck for plowing..

Its not fun diagnosing problems, but worth the effort--I see a lot of expensive parts get put on vehicles that dont cure the problem, because the mechanic decided to just "fix it" rather than find the cause...a lot of semsors get replaced trying to get a check engine light to go out,and a scanner says the sensor is faulty, often though, its a wire that failed or isn't making contact instead..

Even guys I know that are dam good mechanics do it--they'll do things like throw a fuel pump in a vehicle thinking its GOT to be that, then find out dropping the tank and wasting 200 bucks on a pump was wasted effort and time, when they later discovered it was a bad wire,or something like a relay, fuse box problem,etc..

One day when I went to a friends shop he was tearing his hair out trying to get a Ford Ranger to start--he had replaced the distributor module and was about to order an ignition switch for it..I was standing next to the drivers side door as he was lying under the dash testing wires for power with a test lamp--I asked him if he checked all the fuses, and he replied in an irritated voice,"yes I DID check them all"...he was in a sour mood after wasting half the day on the truck and had many other cars to look at..
I told him I asked about the fuses, because I saw one lying on the rug on the drivers side floor..and I pointed at it..

He said "Yeah, that one was a spare one that fell out when I took the cover off --I think"...then he took the cover off again and I see an empty slot for a fuse to go in,marked "ECM"...he puts the fuse in,and turns the key..the truck fires up,and he says "FIGURES!--you show up and in 5 minutes it runs!!"...I had put the test lamp on every fuse too,to see if they all are getting power..
We later found out the guy who brought the truck in to be fixed had just got it at an auction, and pulling the fuses to get a vehicle to not run in order to lower the selling price is a common "trick" some buyers pull, hoping to get a better deal....the owner wasn't pleased to get a 75 dollar bill to replace a fuse, but it did take all day to spot the problem..my friend did not want him to pay for the module, but he did anyway, said it was just as well it was replaced,as they do fail often with no warning..

Good reminder every time we see another truck that looks awesome.

They all have their own problems. Always better to stick with the problems you have, rather than new ones!

Sorry about your luck, hopefully this is all you need for a bit!

The Jimmy has been called back to DD duty. That means I can not beat on it at the off road park this weekend.

Know the feeling. Been putting 100mi+ on the burb every day.

Hopefully you can get the other back to DD duty soon!

Update. Started on the flex plate yesterday afternoon. 3.5 hours later, I had a perfectly good flex plate in my hand. No cracks. ????? Looked harder at the ring gear. I could see fresh rub on the face of the ring. Looked at the starter, new. The spur gear wash not completely in the housing. It was not retracting. Put the whole thing back together with a good starter, and everything was good. Waisted 8 hours for nothing. And the noise at the left wheel is gone.

Go figure.

Ouch! I wonder if i have the same issue. Im getting a cracked flexplate sound on my 78 but have yet to see any cracks in my investigations.

Bad bendix drive in the starter. I've had it before, and a cracked flywheel.

The cracked flywheel sounded like a ticking valve or knocking rod although I'm sure they can sound different depending how bad it is. But the bendix was more constant. That's the only way I can explain it.
