Accidental k30

Where you playing horseshoes at the time you decided not to?
Nope I actually think I may have been driving back to Idaho from Utah. I was mainly worried the gcvwr wouldn't be high enough. Glad I didn't go that route. I need to have a diesel for my current towing needs.

Lol. Just a joke. Almost is like close enough.
Only good in horseshoes and hand grenades.

8.1 with a 6 would be a sweet daily...though....

Yeah the salesman I was talking to was pushing hard for me to drop everything and drive 5 hrs to get it and I was really tempted. It was definitely an "almost".

Lot of big block talk around lately and let me preface this with I am a professional idiot. I can do anything from the transmission down. Motor newb.

I am going to just yank a vortec L29 and put a cam intake and carb on it. This truck needs to stay simple because, I am wire dumb.

So, how do you get 500hp out of that motor?
Is it a good truck useful 500? Sub 4500rpm
Is 500 realistic?

Basic build details.
Nv4500 205, 4.56 and 39" boggers on a 10".
Total street queen with the occasional mudfest.

Guessing 400 is really easy to get to without going nuts on that cam. Have on good word that a TBI 454 will make 385, minus the TBI part

Thanks for the links. I was reading one of them and it seems like I'd like it without too much collateral damage in parts. And yeah I'm used to 850 ft/lbs though it's in a truck twice as heavy.

Reminds me of my grandma's old wagon since the seats face backwards

I've never been sicker in my life than when cruising through the Ozarks as a kid in the back of a wagon like this.

Does the 8.1 zf6 4x4 exist? I neeeeeed that

Larry bought one brand new. Check his sig out.

Meh, not a sweet daily driver at all…although it is fun to drive for a few hours. It would be a great transmission to drive if the truck was loaded to full GVWR 100% of time. Not fun in an unloaded truck. That’s why it got summoned to garage queen years ago and replaced with a leased Malibu when the kiddo was a baby then later a Power Wagon. The idea of a 6 speed behind an 8.1 is awfully romantic but the reality does not live up to the hype. Probably had GM used a NV5600 behind the 8.1 instead of the ZF it would be a different story. The ZF has the most awkward gates of any transmission I’ve ever driven. I’ve own the truck since new and its still easy to launch it from a dead stop in Reverse in stead of 1st. On the flip side, I’m not sure you can break a ZF. They seem to hold together well in the old GMT800s and Stupid Duties that used them for years. GM only used the ZF from 2001 to 2006 behind the 8.1 and Dirtymax. I recall talking to a ZF rep at an industry show years ago and he mentioned 2003 was the biggest year for ZFs in GM HD trucks although a ZF with bucket seats is only a 2 year deal...2001/2002. I'm probably one of very few people that own one of these that they bought brand new. I got mine one week after 9-11-01 when GM first ran the "Keep America Rolling" campaign with .09% interest. Prior to 9-11 0% or near 0% interest was unheard of! Rare piece for sure

I had to pull it out a few years ago to replace the rear main seal on the 8.1. That ZF is yuuuge!

My friend recently replaced a ZF 5 speed and the clutch on a mid 90's F-250 that had a 300 six,I was amazed at the bulk of that thing,it looked like it belonged in an 18 wheeler, not a pickup !..
Only reason the transmission was replaced was it had 275,000 on it and the synchro's were dying from driving it too long with a clutch that refused to release fully..

Another guy I know has the same transmission in a 1990 F-450 Super Duty ramp truck..thing has never given any grief, but he did use a clutch up in it once in about 50,000 miles of towing..the clutch pedal bracket on that truck is cast aluminum,it actually broke in two,he had to get a OEM one from Ford, cost more than the clutch kit did too--was not fun to replace either!..

Yeah I did the daily thing with a ZF Duramax in an '03 I had for a short time. Ok but not as nice to drive as an nv4500 for sure. My service truck at work is a ZF '02 F550 and it's not bad at 18k all the time. I've heard they are a pain to get any parts for anymore when they do have issues. Mine is hard to get into gear at times. Being a plant site mainly rig it gets L, 1, 2, and 3 used mostly.
