Adapting?

What do I need to adapt my 208 case to a TH400 tranny I have laying around?

What trans did your 208 originally come from? A TH400 uses a 32 spline output so the t-case will need a 32 spline input swapped into it if it's a 27 spline and then you'll need a TH400/208 adapter.

The tranny that was mated to my 208 was a 700r4. I also have a 208 mated to a sm465 if that 208 would work with my th400

IIRC the 208's from behind 465's should be 32 spline so with the correct adapter that case should bolt up to your 400.

While we're on this subject---I have a 1974 Monte Carlo TH400 with the short tail, and a NP208 TH400 T-case & adapter from a 80's GM 4x4--any chance I can unbolt the "tail" ,and the tailshaft will slide all the way into that T-case, and be useable "as is" ??..or is the output shaft too long, even on a "short tailed" 400?..
I tried doing searches but got very confused, with all the various "swaps" !..

The 4x4 transmissions use a shorter output shaft than the 2wd's. I tried to find the exact specs, but couldn't for some reason. I did find some pictures though.

This Tail Shaft length is 3". This Tranny would fit a NP208 or NP241 Transfer Case with the proper adapter.

This Tail Shaft length is 1". This Tranny would fit a NP203 or NP205 Transfer Case with the proper adapter.

If they don't work, http://www.justchevytrucks.com/truckparts/transmissions.html.

That chart was the one I wanted to see--thanks for posting it,but my video card stinks in this computer,I cant read any of the specs on it..! probably trying it will be the only way to tell for sure..

fyi those pics and specs are for th350 tranny.

th400 diffrent.

My bad, didn't even notice it only having 4 bolts on the back of it. You did post the image I was looking for though.

The shortest output for the TH400 was for the 203 only, the next, in length, is for the late 205, 208 and 241. After those is the length for the early 205, and the 2wd short.
