Has anyone had any experience with adding a center third brake light to thier Blazer/Jimmy? Looking to see if there are any good options for a molded piece that would mount nicely on the back inside of the cap. I have only seen one, but it was a real custom job, where the guy cut out part of the fiberglass and made it flush with the surface of the cap. I was thinking of perhaps a contoured piece from maybe a older Ford sedan (fliped upside down) and wired in the the tail lights.

Feedback welcomed

Thanks

You asked for feedback, I think it's a waste of time. :)

The third brakelight is there as a backup to your primary brakelights, to help save us from those that don't correct deficiencies on their vehicles.

If you were going to do it right, you'd also add another brake light switch, and run an entirely separate circuit.

I only say it's a waste of time if you are talking about doing it for the safety factor, if you like the way they look, then hey, that's personal preference. Just don't be "sold" by the fact that every new vehicle has one. If it weren't mandated by law (Libby Dole IIRC) no vehicle would have one.

Our tops are supposed to have a steel reinforcement in that back area, I'd be worried about compromising it's integrity at this point, not to mention how far the tailgate glass goes up in it.

It doesn't look like your truck has the factory spoiler? That might be another option, use those hold downs for a light up on top.

Funny thing, I've actually got a retrofit GM third brake light (actual GM piece) but I'm not sure what it fits yet. Came in a lot of stuff I bought on ebay. Looks to me like it's for the 78-88 A/G bodies, which got the third light in '86 I want to say.

ive seen some blazer/limmys with a third brake light but it was on the tire carriers, above 37+ tires. wich the hole setup was custom.

I think there is a place for a third brake light. When I had a tire carrier and gas can on a swing away bumper, I wanted to add a third brake light. I followed my blazer home one night when the wife was driving it. I noticed at any kind of angle, only one tail light was visible. That was when I thought about adding a third light. I was going to make it part of the tire carrier like smalltown mentioned.

I'd look for an LED surface mount. When I cut up a top to dispose of it there is a little space to recess a light before you hit the metal brace but I think a 1/2" hole would be much easier to seal than say a 2"x4" hole to try and set a light in. There is also an open channel to run wiring down to the bedside. Of course your skill with bailing wire rests with you.

Ya know best option? Find a top somebody is giving away and have at it with a sawzall. Take your own measurements and see what you want to try:D

Definitely a doable project;) Take pics! I'm not sure why I didn't.
