Adventures of Pblaze {Mt. Whitney Hike}

Thanks bubba.

YES the 'that was easy button' was still next to the sign in sheet along with several other nic nacs.:D

So awesome! I'd really like to do that hike. How long did you take to pack back out? What was the process like to get the permit?

Thanks. We broke the hike down to smaller goals so we could get acclimated to the elevation changes.
Our schedule was like this.

Thursday - meet at Whitney Portal Station and camp there.- 8000ft

Friday- hike to outpost camp. 3.5 miles - 10,000 ft

Saturday- hike to Trail Camp- 3.5 miles- 12,000 ft

Sunday- hike to Summit- 3.5 miles-14,487 ft, then hike back to trail camp and pack up camp, and then head all the way back down to The portal station.

About 15 miles on Sunday. :D

Charlie twisted his ankle so we had to go slow. We got off the trail at 10:00pm.

Too tired to drive home Charlie, Art, and I checked into the local motel and slept it off.
We went home the next morning.

To get the permit I set my alarm for Feb 1st and put in my application for an overnight permit.
You can have a group of up to 15 people go.
It was around March that I checked my profile and saw that my dates were approved for Memorial Weekend.
I had to confirm the dates right before the trip and had to pay $15 per each person in my group.
You pick up the permit at the visitors center off Hwy 395 in Lone Pine.

Some people make a day trip out of it and go all the way up and back. You can just drop in at the visitors station and pick up a day pass.

You did exactly the same thing as us but we took 2 days (wish we had taken 3 - one of us had to turn back from hypoxia). The last day was tough: started at 7am, summited around 1ish,
didn't make it back to trail camp until 5pm (breakdown the tents) and made portal almost 11p. Afterwards, we had a hearty steak at a cafe in Lone Pine & a good nights rest and then took a tour of Manzanar Internment Camp and finally went home. It used to be that you didn't need a permit/pass on the trail as long as you didn't camp (day trip). I guess it changed when the trail started getting trashed. Dealing with the wag bags were another thing...

Haha! The sign in board still looks exactly the same...

That's a nice trash bag.

It's a shame how many people leave their wag bags under rocks on the trail.

I'm always shocked at how many outdoorsmen are miserable stewards of their public lands. It is phenomenally disappointing to me.

Great pictures man! Thanks for sharing. Cool tribute to your bud, too.
