Adventures with Big Blue

My pickup still has 95% of the firewall covering & insulation--only part missing is around the heater box,I assume someone replaced the heater core somewhere in its past, and just tore that part off...

The engine just seems "clattery" compared to many other 6.2's,including my Burb..especially at idle or slightly above, once you get it above 2000 rpm or so it isn't as noticeable..

It also seems to vibrate more than the Burb too...everything in the cab buzzes and rattles, mostly at the lower rpms..that is typical of all diesels to some degree, every one I have owned does that, including my old VW Jetta I had..

If everything is rattling and buzzing, check your motor mounts. That should not be the case.

I think one or both front exhaust pipes rub against the frame,or maybe my extra heavy duty exhaust hangers dont isolate the vibes...
Diesels just tend to vibrate more due to the higher compression I think also..(My harmonic balancer looks OK,the plow pump pulley someone added to it does wobble a bit though..)

Time to fix some of the annoying little things. Chiefly this:

For the last 3 or 4 years my CDR valve has been venting to atmosphere. Spraying tiny amounts of oil all over my fender. And after a few years, the quantity doesn't seem so tiny.

I thought I had heard of a factory application for atmospheric venting. Any ideas what that would have been? Is it just a failed CDR valve that lets oil past it? Or is atmospheric venting always this way?

I'm not so keen to drill CDR holes into the 6.5 manifold, that would cause problems if I ever did pressurize it. I can put the C-code manifold back on if need be. That's the quick'n'dirty way of making the problem go away.

Reasonable suspicion. I'm full of less than useful knowledge.

As I understand it, our race engines were always closed-circuited with a CDR. Some folks have plugged in an aftermarket PCV, but that's proven to cost tenths in the quarter, and is otherwise a bad idea.

The CDR intake side just needs to be tied into a NA plenum or on the intake side of a turbo. That's how the factory did it.

Well, bummer. This mod is one that seemed to make a slightly noticeable difference.

I did reinstall the C-code manifold. It had a surprising effect on the sound. Not a huge effect on driveability. I still don't think I've filled the tank since last year's Yooper trip. So that puts me at <900 miles over the last 11 months. Mostly hauling scrap or trash. Will be doing that again soon.

In other words, this truck is thoroughly into the sunset years of boringness. It's just barely useful enough to avoid getting sold off. For now. That'll probably change when the Burb gets back on the road.

Bump. Not much news here, but the truck is still around.

I've gotten pretty tired of the tire imbalance I've had for the last few years (junkyard tires with visible flat spots). And I've developed a slow leak on the front, in addition to cracking.

Found a set of four General street tires for $308 shipped. With another $50 in rebate (which should pay for mounting). So I finally pulled the trigger on new tires today (link). I'm now almost completely rid of junkyard tires! :thumb:

I have a few errands to run and then I'll probably park it again before the salt comes out. It has a pretty easy life, eh? :haha:

Oh, I had to add ATF this summer, so the pan seal still isn't working right. I'm gonna grab the pan off of the 700R4 I just pulled outta the Suburban. It has a drain plug. :woot: :saweet:

Bump. Absolutely nothing has happened here. But the state decided to remind me again of this truck's existence. Hard to believe it's already been 2 years since the last go around. I think it has only gained a couple of thousand miles in that time. And half of that was just the one camping trip.
