I have a pretty good understanding of how things should work, especially when I am the one to take them apart, but this installation kit is driving my nuts. It all makes sense until I get to the stage where I have to install the horn. I have tried everything I know of, but when I put the Grant hub on, with the factory plastic plunger piece behind it, the horn is grounded and goes nonstop, I can't figure this thing out. I have followed Grant directions as well as they are written, but something is definitely missing. Do I have to remove the horn contact plate and plastic piece? You know the part directly behind the spring loaded retaining clip? Please help if you know how this is done?

when i did it, i used the horn stuff from the original horn, eff the instructions and just do what works:-)

I inherited a grant steering wheel with the tilt column I installed. I'm guessing it is from the 80's or early 90's so I don't know if they are the same. It took me an entire weekend to get it to work right. Mine has a small round plastic horn button in the center of the wheel. Under the button is a brass dome that sits in a brass spring. That brass spring touches the adaptor that Grant gives you for the steering column. When the button is pressed it pushes down the brass dome collapsing the spring and touching the dome to the piece of metal that the ground wire is attached to. That creates the ground and should trigger the relay to make the horn work.

Hope that helps.

when I put mine on the back of the button had 2 or 3 tabs to connect the wire to. The instructions kept telling me to hook it to the wrong one which made it go off.

I had a time with mine also , took me a while to get it right!! Instructions were no help at all!! I have to tear mine down tommorrow to take the column apart to tighten the tilt up , if you dont have it by then I will pay attention to what I do to get it back together so maybe that will help ya out.

I think my wires where backwards, try pluging them in the other way.

ok, I went home and slept on it. The next morning I confirmed that everything was correct. The ground is what makes the horn sound, but I was having a problem figuring out how it was going to get ungrounded until the horn button on the center cap was pushed, then the whole picture became clear. The center cap/horn button is elevated off the steering wheel by a spring, which means that the end of the horn wire, being connected to the connector just behind the cap, would not be grounded until the cap is pushed. So I went ahead and disconnected the battery, continued the installation all the way, reconnected the battery, pushed the horn button, and it worked beautifully, just like it should. I realized that my thought of keeping the battery connected to alert me of it not being hooked up right, was ok, but just very annoying because of the noise. On the '73 Blazer installation, you have to follow the Grant instructions exactly, especially on the brass plunger portion. The only thing Grant did not discuss was having to take off the cover plate that screws on to the metal plate that acts as the wheel lock when the key is in the off position. You have to take this cover off in order for the new adaptor cover to fit properly. I went as far as depressing the whole mechanism, removing the retaining ring, and starting from the turn signal switch and back out. By the way, unless you have the depression tool, this can be difficult. I could do it in my sleep now, but it was the second guessing that made me stumble. If anyone needs help, I would be glad to help, at least with the same model and install as I have.
