Advice on best winch for a grand or less

my 2 warn 8274 units i got each one used for 400 - 500 range . 1 had new cable . other has aluminum fairlead and synthetic line.

just got to look . 1 of them was local on a whole blazer dirt cheep . other was offline i think here few years ago and with shipping i think it was the 500 buck unit.

the only real thing they changed was hp of motor . easy to make old unit run like new . get newer motor and its gear and bam you have a newer 8274 winch .

only real con i can ever see in them is HUGE winch .
 
Just wanted to make sure that you saw Warn was doing a rebate right now. $100-$200 depending on model

I'm running a superwinch epi9.0 that's a few years old. I've only used it a few times but good so far. Probably wouldn't be my choice if I was wheeling hard. Much better than the Ramsey I had on my last FJ40 17 years ago, though.
 
With that Rebate above you can get the usa made Zeon instead of the VR and it should be right close to budget
 
I'm running a Warn xd9000i on mine and Love it. I got mine for nothing as it came off a customer's Jeep due to a dead solenoid. It's a hell of a winch though. $30 for a new solenoid and it's not skipped a beat. Pulled our C4500 Rollback Wrecker from being stuck in the soft ground on our dealer's property and that rig is probably every bit of 12,000 pounds empty. On the same rescue mission it also pulled out a good sized Kubota tractor stuck up to its hubs in mud. Not that I recommend pulling well over the rated capacity, but it proved to me that the xd9000i is under-rated as it didn't even struggle.
 
Engo E10000 winch. Been running mine since 2012. Never skips a beat, was only $350 to my door new back in 2012...though Warn's are nice (not going to deny that, they are really good winches), just not worth the price tag they put on them IMO. There are lots of good dependable laydown winches out there nowadays that are almost half the cost of a warn, and hold up for a really long time. To each their own though
 
My buddy bought one of those harbor freight winches, a 9000 pounder I think, and used it one time before it quit working. Come to find out they are not very weatherproof and it was on the front bumper of his Jeep, got rained on, and that's all it took.

My dad and brother both have HF's 12K winch...had them both for years and they have worked just fine. Now, they both keep them in the back of their trucks in cradles and have front hitches/wire disconnects on their rigs. So they only take them out of the back and hook them up when they need them...but they have both work great and are still going. Dad has had his for almost 5 years, brother for just over 2 years
 
Yep been watching that. I went today to order and they got rid of a 10 % off deal so I think I will wait till Christmas time to pull the plug and see what kind of a price I can get. Still have work to do on the bomb so it goes vroom vroom again Ok maybe only one vroom.
 
Pulled the trigger on the VR-12S. Got it through 4wheel parts so I could take it back locally. Looking forward to it arriving. Thanks everybody for all the advice. Now to get off my tail and get the rig roadworthy again so I can test it.

So...have you gotten off your tail yet? I'm in a similar spot this year. Though it's hard for me to fathom needing a 12k winch for a 6k rig that doesn't do rock crawling. Pretty sure my extractions will be more or less straight line pulling.
 
A 6000# truck stuck in 1' deep Mud can be more like a 9000# truck to extract
 
I think I remember something about him being pulled out of a big mud hole/puddle last summer:thinking:

Isn't too hard to think a small puddle is just that, until you drive in and realize the guy before you had 44"s:doah:
