So I got to thinking about how this truck of mine had a aftermarket water temp senser that ran directly from the port to the guage in the dash. This would bypass the ECM correct? If so wouldent it be running rich as hell all the time? I have put the proper sensor back in and it does run alot better but im thinking I may check the plugs and O2 as it could be all fouled up from running rich.

Also why we are on the subject of PO things, the intake has some sort of bowl on top. Is this a after market job? There is no snorkal on the cleaner its just the bottom with top flipped over. To me this seems dumb as it gets REALLY hot under the hood so you would just be sucking in hot air.

Yes the lack of a temp sensor signal is going to cause some issues with the ECM, although I am no expert on what the issues would be. Running rich sounds right though.

As far as the air cleaner, I have seen that before for drawing more air in. Basically the idea is that without the snorkel you have a full 360* of air being drawn in. Can't say if it works or not, but that is why it is done that way. Yes it will pull hot air, but it isn't like these trucks usually have the hose for the snorkel to pull cool air.

LOL so true. However there is a full assembally that looks like it is brand new from the factory in the back of a Burb at the salvage yard... the rest of this beast looks like hell washed over it but the engine compartment is all clean and shiny. Even has white coolent and windshield wiper bottles with bright blue wiper fluid in it... its so odd.

i take it we're talking about a tbi truck here... afaik, the ecm gets it's info from the cts (coolant temp sensor) in the intake, not from the water temp sensor in the head...

Not sure what year truck you are asking about but there are two different engine temp senders. One for the guage and the other for the ECM.

Which one did you change, what was the location and what kind of wire was running to it?

So there are two sensors one single pole(resistance style) sensor for the guage and one for the ECM? The one that i replaced is in the water jacket on the drivers side head.

Its a 90 with the 350TBI.

the one in the head has nothing to do with the ECM.... the cts in the intake does that job....

Guess it running better was all in my head:haha:

It has a vac leak some where becuase it will surge pretty hard at idle once it warms up.
