I have been him-hawing around about doing some form of front axle upgrade. Well, today I said screw it and picked this up

I still need to order a few other things to complete the swap first thing this week, but I'm excited :woot:

your scratching the paint with that chain.

nice score...details....how $$$$

Yeah, I'll touch up the paint once it's bolted up (son of a beetch is heavy)

I paid $1300. It's completely rebuilt/regeared and ready to roll though. I have been looking and found quite a few 60's but it seemed almost all of them were missing parts. I also got screwed on a 14-bolt I got off of Craigslist a couple months ago and decided to just fork over the money to get one that's done.

How did you get screwed? Help me learn from your experience. :doah:

Well, the ad said the axle was a 14-bolt out of a mid 80's 4x4 (it wasn't). Turns out that after I posted a few pics & numbers on here, it was actually a 2wd 1973 14-bolt. That's not too bad but the guy said it had a 4.10 gear.....nope it was a 3.73. To top it off, the thing was full of water. I had to replace every bearing, seal, etc in it. The moral of my story is the 2wd models have shock mounts that hang lower (I had to cut them off, shorten them & reweld them back on). I should have also taken the cover off and verified the gears were what the seller claimed. I took his word that the axle was in "great" shape and ready to run other than maybe a set of brake shoes.
