Trying to see if anybody has any ideas on what to do for chrome coming off aluminum wheels . About 4 months ago I came across a set of 16x10 chrome wheels brand new for a really good deal . Main reason I bought them I thought it would help with towing as I had 315s on the stock steel wheels for my 86 sub . While it did help a lot with the swaying the chrome is peeling of one of them . Went back to where I bought them and they say the company that made them is no longer making them .they have 4 but something about somebody put those on layaway but if he didn't take them they would give me one or my money back for it just seeing if you guys had any ideas on how to at least stop the peeling if I have to go the money back route .

If it's peeling, it's already de-laminated at least in that area but probably further and just hasn't come off yet. Can you get them refurbished - stripped, and re-chromed or painted?

I have the same problem with the wheels on my car. I looked into getting them re-chromed, but I was seeing prices like $250/wheel. No thanks. I'll just buy some after market ones.

chrome aftermarket or custom wheels never seem to hold up well

years in a tire shop you couldn't get me to buy chrome over aluminum wheels . any spot for moisture to get in corrodes the aluminum and the chrome has nothing to stick to .

if the manf had chromed the WHOLE rim it would happen a lot less. but these days only thing sealed up and shinny is the face you see.

Peeling chrome always leads to unstoppable bead leaks, especially chrome/aluminum, been there done that. You can seal them for a while but they will just leak later. If he offered a refund, take them back.

The only way to stop the peeling is to take all of the chrome off, sorry, but aluminum rusts (oxidizes) too.

Discount Tire has actually fixed this twice on my car so far. For no charge. I'm not sure what they use, but they put some kind of sealer along the bead, to stop the leaks. I've driven probably 2,000 miles since the last time they did it. It's a helluva lot cheaper than getting the wheels fixed.

That black stuff is bead sealer, I did the same thing, over and over and over, for a few years then finally got sick of it, and bought different rims. See Craigslist - Auto Parts

If I were in a larger city, I could probably find identical wheels to replace mine. Where I'm at now, I'd have to order online and pay for shipping. It's just out of my budget right now. And, like I said, I'd really prefer to keep stock wheels on this thing.

I don't drive my car but maybe 10 miles a week, if that. With a monthly 4 hour round-trip drive to the Amarillo VA.

Luckily it's not the bead just cosmetic at this point . I feel the same as everybody else on keeping factory wheels but with 35 inch tires it walks all over the road when pulling a trailer . I have also been told that I could put some clear coat on them to stop it has anybody tried this
