Air Bump stops-Finished

SBD see if you can bottom resi mounts, I was reading this can replace bump stops because it creates a bump zone at the top of the shock.
The resi being on top allows the IFP to compress the gas on compression. If you move the IFP below the area once the piston is at bottomed position there isnt anywhere for the oil to go except through the piston and basically creates a hydraulic lock situation which is what a bump is duh.. something to think about considering you already have the bypasses.

2.5" sounds much nicer. 4" is just too much. Annoying when your bump stops hit when you drive over a small pot hole

For sure! Definitely hate 4" ones. Everybody that rides in it asks what all those clunky noises are when im just cruising in the dunes

Here is how I did mine, I plan on more plating once I figure out what im gonna do for shock mounts.

Those are 4" bodies. Are they 4" with travel reducers? If so, you can go longer down the road if needed.

They are not 4" bodies, so no go longer but I don't see me changing things up anytime soon.

So these were/are a bit more challenging to install than I had thought they were gona be. Everything is a 1-off home made with a grinder, cutoff wheels,flap disc's, drill, jigsaw, and welder. O-Ya a whole lot of measuring and starring at it also. Better be worth it.

It will be worth it. I guarantee it. Looks good. I am assuming you are welding the vertical piece to the can also. It will need the verticle support.

You might want to put a piece of tubing between the bump plate and the spring plate. That bump plate will bend in the middle. Been there.

Yes & Yes it's all only spot welded enough to hold it together right now(Easier to cut it apart if I need to modify) and several of my peeps have already politely suggested the plate will bend and I'll never be able to unbolt it. I just thought I could slap em on faster than it's takin. Do you think I will need a brace from can to can inside the cab area to keep the frame from flexing?

I wouldn't think the frame would flex, but some plate on the rear to act like "washers" wouldn't be a bad idea.

I get the spot welding. Just wanted to be sure you were not just welding the U shaped pieces only.

If you are not welding the plate to the frame, just bolting, you need a decent compression plate on the back like Ben mentioned. The stresses on the bump stops are impressive. I have seen them bend brackets like Adams. Have seen brackets ripped from the frames. Not the welds failing.

Once you start using them, and realize what the truck can do, you always seem to push a little harder. Build to that on bump stop brackets.

Got em welded up and mounted. Max up travel is set at about 6 inches from ride height. Just shy of hitting the frame. Still need to brace the top half under the seat

Actually I just finished putting it all back together this late afternoon. As with all this custom 1st gen stuff I had to take it all apart a couple more times then re-paint it cuz I had to do more welding on it. I added the brace on the top of the can inside the cab under the seat which led to modifying the seat brackets so the can could protrude through it.I'm undecided as of yet if I'm going to thru bolt that bar to the floor(I think I probably should). I also welded some 1" solid squares and some 1/4" plate together to fill the gap under the strike plate. 3 weeks work and I got 1/2 done, the fronts may really pose a challenge. I'm also not looking forward to taking another spring pack apart. I may just wait a bit.

Get the front done so you can go play. You will be surprised at how quickly you get used to them and run faster.

Started on the front air bumps last weekend. Started with a 12"x12"X5/8" plate, a couple of cut off wheels and a drill. New home made spring plates to build off of for the strike pads
