Air cleaner lid anyone..?

Anyone run a breatheable air cleaner lid ,like this. Speedway motors has em for 40.00 shipped. seems like it would help air flow alot with having a carb. Would benefit me i think also having a x450 propane carb.
Comes in black and chrome, chrome is 40 plus shipping and the black is 30 plus shipping. Shipping comes to right around 10 bucks. About half the price of the k&n.










Take off the solid lid of your 14" air cleaner and increase the air flow to your carb by 30%. Washable.910-11081 Shown in Photo.
Note: Filter top is 1.5" tall at center.
 
I have been running a K&N one for about a year now. I does seem to be an improvement in throttle response and I can really hear the difference at WOT.

sure you can hear it, you don't have the enclosed lid muffling the sound from the intake. I ran an open element filter out in Phoenix for about a week, yeah it sounded cool, looked nice, but in that hot summers out there i honestly FELT a noticeable power loss from this breather. Too much hot air.

Swapped back over to the fully enclosed unit with the factory cold air tube and ran much better.

Your engine is only going to bring in as much air as it's build for, stock motors or even a mildly built motor is just fine with a factory cold air style tubing intake setup. If ya don't have one due to being an older truck, i'd look into a cold air kit either factory style, or aftermarket before installing any open air element setup.

Plus i personally don't think the fully enclosed air filter assemblies get dirty as fast. Less "open area" for dirt & mud to get sucked into the element, the cold air kits limit the area and are pretty well baffled or enclosed (for lack of better wording) to prevent moisture and debris from getting to the filter element.
 
Yeah I had an open element. I switched back for the same reason. On hot days the engine would be really doggy. PLus cold weather it ran like poo. When I went back to the factory style with a K&N air filter, my throttle response is soo much better, plus my mileage went up, and I don't have to worry about getting my open element wet like it did before.
 
I also laugh, well, more of a chuckle, when i see someone open their hood, and have a factory style cold air intake setup with enclosed air filter assembly, but they have the lid mounted upside down, "to allow more airflow"

Won't help. I have a street car iron headed 388 small block in my regal that runs high 11s without the juice, and I completely removed the air cleaner (14" paper element edelbrock air cleaner) and it made ZERO difference in ET. So, unless you are making gobs of power, it won't help. How much does it take to need more airflow, I don't know yet, 600 hp, 800? But for 99% of vehicles, it won't matter.

I do like the K&N oil/gauze element for it's filter qualities and reuse though. And in certain stock applications where the factory air intake routing is restrictive, K&N's can imrpove performance slightly, but a "filtercharger", hardly.
 
What tho if you have a cowl hood and not so stock motor, Im running a 350 .040 with 12.5:1 with a propane carb x450. I have a spacer to use my 14inch air cleaner so the spacer might be some what restrictive, the air cleaner sits high close to the cowl.... im not sure tho, would this all be any different for that lid or is it still a waste..?

I have a cowl hood on my 388 regal, and it's not stock either. :D

Propane works very well i might add.....now anyway...lol. They say that the carb i have to have least restriction as possible, thats why i was asking about the all mighty lid....lol. I was thinking also to make a air tube with 4 inch pipe to work like the newer trucks but im not sure whats the best way.

Just keep it from freezing/good tune, thats what all the cool kids told me :whistle:

Guilty of flipping by breather lid upside down before. Its mounted correct now. :whistle:
 
what about those stock air cleaner housing that also have a driver side inlet?

like dual direct flow setups? i have seen them on nascar and autozone sells them to, that way you can run your factory hose to the opening and then also run another hose to the driver side.

should be plenty of cold flowing air right?
 
Again, high horsepower engines really only benefit from the added tubing, Nascar engines are alot more HP than our mostly stock motors in these rolling bricks. They also run close to wide open throttle for most of the several hours/couple hundred miles they are running at high RPM's.

you sure? more air never hurt any motor i have ever seen :dunno:


your single factory inlet allows for the coldest possible air to enter the carb, adding another to the other side of the engine bay is going to allow for more air to flow into the carb which means a more efficent motor.

on any motor it would help due to the fact that your pushing your efficency up. it might not be a noticable difference but it sure is not gonna hurt anything.

upgrading to the smooth flowing tube style and getting rid of the old factory ribbed one would help a bunch.

and anyone is welcome to correct me if im wrong but moving the air filter down to core support is better in a performance setup than the stock setup. due to air that travels up the inlet tube slows down when it reaches the filter therefor heating up due to the motor temp. if you slow the airdown at the filter at the core support where the air is cooler, after passing thru the filter it then is not restricted when reaching the inake so it will not heat up as fast.

again will you notice a difference? maybe not, and maybe you will. Of course thats not the best setup for mud runners or water crossing due to putting your filters right where they can be covered.

I have seen a lot of those in the Firebirds with dual hood scoops feeding those 2 sides, in that case they help since they are cold air intake straight from outside, not going from under the hood.
I think I kept one of them for a future project.:whistle:
