Which way is the "correct" way for the the oem air cleaner snorkel to face?

And what is the "indent" for on the bottom edge? I don't see anything in the way that would require the need for the indent put into the air cleaner body?

I think it goes to the passenger side as shown in the photos below. That is the direction our 76 K10 had it.

The indent I'm not sure about but it seems like the "snorkel" would kind of lock in to place as it turned to the passenger firewall. Maybe the indent has something to do with that or the air filter sits in the indent. Sorry, don't really remember.

Thanks...it just sort of makes me wonder because it looks correct facing the passenger side like yours but yet the indent is visible when turned in that direction....it sort of looks like this one was meant to face the driver's side...but I can't imagine why

correct, pass side....if it draws air from the drivers side the engine spins backwards!

The indentations in the base of the air cleaner are to index it on the airhorn, to clear the acc pump on the carb, and give proper orientation to the crankcase breather from the valve cover on the pass side.

OK...closer inspection reveals that it is a dent...not intended by the factory....Ryoken...can I fix this with body tools and filler?

looks like someone bashed it in, to make clearance for something (like the dist. if it was pointed toward the drivers side)

Get out the torch and a body hammer and heat and beat. Should go back pretty easy. The bottom edge might be a little tricky.

be careful though, that metal is already stretched, you need to shrink it to get it back to form with the rest of the a/c shape.

Why not just get a new one from a junkyard?
Where is the fun in that? That cleaner still has LIFE! Im not from the generation that fixed everything but I was raised in my Grandpa's garage and he taught me to fix what you got.

Metal has a memory. I wouldnt use heat.

I guess I'm just spoiled with the AZ junkyards. Fixing it is cool:thumb:

I can't believe the yards out there haven't caught onto the "let's turn these things into cubes because the Chinese will pay insane prices for metal"....

The junk yards out here are definitely getting their money out of the wrecked vehicles, they sell as much off of them as possible, with core charges to replace the weight of the part just sold.

Very little weight is lost in a wrecked vehicle the junk yard scraps.

down here they have cleaned out the yards....there is a "U" shaped driveway...the trailers pull up all day long...stop on the scales...stop in the middle...the big crane lifts the car/truck off the trailer and puts it in the crusher (they don't care what condition it is in) the trailer drives to near the end of the "U" and land on another scale...math is done....cash is paid and this goes on all day long....and they no longer have to put cars on the yard and wait for parts to be sold or deal with people....straight to the crusher and off to china..

they pay about $280 / ton...or about .15 a pound...

I usually scrap those style of air cleaners, I don't like the little intake spout, but I may have one laying around. I could look for you.
