I think this may have been covered before. IDK. Anyways I have always wondered what is the best route? I see a lot of factory air cleaners and makes me wonder if there is something I do not know.

Looking for most power, yet most fuel economy

I run a factory air cleaner housing with a K&N filter. I like simplicity for my truck and I love the fact that I only have to buy 1 air filter and I can re-use it over and over and over again.

Factory, with paper air filter (that is what I have on my K5 and my V10). Although my K30 does have an open element air cleaner, it was just the cheapest and easiest route at the time.

The colder the air intake charge the better the performance will be and fuel mileage. I run a K&N filter inside the factory air cleaner housing. I've been wanting to make my housing a dual snorkle but that's a project for another day.

I have always run an open element K&N. Cold weather performance is sad, and when it gets hot outside you can tell the engine is struggling. I ran my factory air cleaner for about a month last year, and only noticed cold engine performance was better. Higher RPM's suffered.

I considered running a K&N inside my factory air cleaner, but wanted to make sure before dumping the money again for another air filter.

I use the K&N inside the factory housing. It seems to work well. I believe the long intake tube up to the back of the grill helps get a little more cool air to the engine than an open element style filter setup does. Keeps the filter cleaner for longer too, especially if you get in any mud. I have the tall 305 housing. I could definately feel a little more power throughout the rpm range after I put it in.
