On top of the air filter is an original label noting idle and plug adjustments for 1977 Heavy Duty engines. On the side of the air filter is another label that notes that engine is a 400. What are the odds that my 383 will be "found" at a station for a smog check? I will try and find the "best" place but can a 383 pass for a 400 if they don't look too hard?

unless they actually check the block casting number they look almost identical from the outside. If you originally had the heavy duty emmissions it prolly is not going to be much of an issue.

I believe as long as you have all the original factory emissions equipment that came on that motor, (if any) then all they should do is check to see that it's hooked up and working, and sniff it.

one of the guys down here had his 415 stroker pass for a 350, teh tests measure ppm and % not total volume of air so the engine may pump thru more air but as long as its not dirty the tester isn't gonna notice if its pumping 283 cubes or 434 cubes

if its VIN code M truck then its the HD 350 in which was reduced emissions equipment from factory due to higher GVW rating, what is the engine VIN code digit and what is the total GVW rating listed on the door sticker ? im curious,
