Only trouble I had after that was trying to seal up the port where that plug was originally..I tried epoxy paste,a tiny freeze plug,but it always weeped

I found a flat plastic plug at the hardware store that fit the APT hole. The air cleaner ring gasket formed to the slight rise. They make a tapped plug kit and I bought that too but have not bothered to install it.

My 72 GMC had an oem exhaust like you posted. Be aware that a cross-over there hangs down sorta low. It contacted the ground and got pushed into the front drive shaft when I was high centered going over a berm. It left a dimple in the exhaust pipe. On my K5 I had a dual exhaust routed up high to avoid this (created new problem since one exhaust now parallels fuel line).

I got two books, a vacuum gauge, inductive tachometer, flexible carb adjustment tool....and it turns out to be that the choke needs adjustment

You will need the other stuff eventually. Vacuum gauge is for the win. I have one installed in my dash - went from 9 mpg to 12 mpg.

I had a vacuum gauge in just about all my gas powered cars and trucks..
They do help you gain mpg by letting you see where the highest vacuum level is when cruising--it is surprising how much you can back off the throttle and still maintain the speed you want to travel at..
