So the chromo shafts/superjoints came today for the dana 44 and my recent trail fix got me to thinking that doing a shaft on a trail would suck, pretty bad. So I'm pretty sure that when my 36in TSLs are shot I'm gonna go to a 35in MTR rather than a 37in MTR.

Yes I know bigger is always better but my 36s only measure 35in on the 10in wide wheels as it is and I figure there would be no change with 35s on an 8in wheel. What do you guys think?

I figure with 35s the blinged dana 44 will be pretty damn beefy.

I think that going smaller will be better for the Dana44 for sure and I don't think you will miss much in the way of clearance.

i honestly think you will regret it. being a trail rig your going to almost always want to go bigger it seems. i have 35s on my truck and i want to go bigger. even a 37 would be nice but i know i really want 42s one day. idk its a tough call but i think 37s would be fine with the bling 44 as long as you arent stupid with it.

A 37 MTR probably weighs less than a 36 TSL. I think you'd be fine w/ 37s.

Well my truck isnt a trail rig only. Its built for trails but its also my DD. I'm finding the 3.73s a little lacking when tackling hills on the highway too. 3rd is just too low to down shift and 4th dogs a little. Theres no way I'm regearing either.

And as said my 36's measure 35's....

I would go with the 37. It's not gonna be a full 37 if you go with the mtr I'm sure. Why not go with an irok? You could go with a 36 and I'm sure it would be a 35 when mounted up. They seem to be good all around

Do

not

go

smaller

:D

my mtr's were 35" tall when not under the truck. under my blazer they measured about 34".

Ok swampers are out of the question on this tire change unless their MT's are decent priced and good.

I'm not going with anything BIAS. The TSL's I have now arent bad on the street and definitely arent leaving me wanting more on the trail BUT I need something better on the road with wear.

The truck gets me back and forth to school and pretty soon I'm gonna be taking it camping, through different states, multiple different states. After going to PA and upstate newyork I've realised I wanna see this country I live in before I'm done with school and tied down to a real job and morgage.

Ok well why not look into the new bfg mud terrain. I would also suggest the baja claw. My friend had some and they lasted for years on his DD.

15 in wheels would be the big problem. IDK I was thinking of stepping up to 16 in wheels but they seem to be fazing them out too. I looking into the new MTRs and they are 17in wheels too.

At this stage of the game I'm thinking its gonna be a 37 MTR original since as said they're only gonna measure 36 anyway.

BTW I considered claws but I've heard they are terrible tires off the road.

Yea it seems everything is 17 now. You can't get the new bfg in a 37x16 only 37x17. You can also still get the original bfg mud terrain for real cheap now. And they will last so long.
As far as the baja claw he loved them but around here we have alot of mud so as far as trials and stuff I'm not sure

Claws are the same way with sizing. They dont even make 37's. I know they used to make 36's but they arent on natonal tire and wheel.

I wish they had STT's in 37s....

A few tidbits:

I've had good luck with MTRs. 35k miles over 5+ years, and then I've started getting cuts, probably due to aged rubber. I've got new ones now thanks to purchasing a tire warranty back in '03 (4WP - free replacement if tire wear didn't exceed 50%). So no problem with longevity. The knock on first-gen MTRs was that their performance in wet conditions would decrease rapidly once the tire had some time on it, and that jives with my experience. And the MTR is an agressive all-terrain, not a mud tire.

From my own shopping around for 37s: not much selection for 16" wheels (Swampers or Swampers - IROKs or Trxus??, ProComp X-Terrain); cheapest for 17" wheels were Hankook Dynapro (the way I read the Hankook 'warranty' is that they are not terribly confident in their product offroad), and Cooper SST (they work well but the rubber doesn't age gracefully, not out here in AZ). My own list in no particular order is Cooper SST / MTR II / KM2/ Nitto Terra Grappler sounds funny, but I've seen NTGs grip where my MTRs were just spinning...

I dont get what you mean. You feel that MTRs arent a true mud terrain tire? Why so? They are clearly more geared toward off road driving, and follow the typical just of an MT.

Im afraid I'm gonna be let down off road if I dont pick the right tire after having the tsls. I just found the STT's and see they come in 37s. I hate the fact that in order to consider any tire other than mtrs I have to get 17in wheels....

How about geolander mt's, any experience?

In my (admittedly limited) mud experience the MTR tread will clog quickly, and doesn't clean itself out very well with wheelspeed. That is also why my mud experience is limited (1 trip to an OHV park in MO, and 1 to KS...) - the MTRs don't work that well in mud, and so I stay the hell out of it whenever I can. In AZ and UT, that's not so difficult. Most of the trails are dry and rocky, and the MTRs do well out here.

I've been happy with the on-road performance as well, in terms of highway manners. My UT wheeling trips nowadays are typically some 1400 miles, with about 1200 on the highway. I've driven the truck from Nebraska to Blazer Bash many times. I have not driven the MTRs in snow - not because of the tires, but because I didn't want the truck exposed to Nebraska road salt.

How many of you east coast guys are running MTRs?

No idea on the Geolandars...

EH reviews dont seem good on the geolanders but they look badass.

Not many people here run anything but boggers and TSLs because they drive their 12in lifted trucks to the hole, go through once, and then go have a fire. Thats NJ wheeling.

My concerns is I plan to do some roadtripping, and camping across quite a few states. I dont wanna watch my tires disappear everytime I take a break on the highway. I also dont wanna sacrifice offroad performance too much. I know I'm gonna take a little hit but I need something thats gonna go for alot longer than these TSLs

Honestly I would consider two sets of tires in this case. Find some cheap all terrains on craigslist since you need to drive it to school. Then have another set for your trips. Heck you might even find some 37s on craigslist that you want
