Alcan Spring

We can do it. Have a Cummins? No problem. Winch and bumper too? No problem.

I talked to one of your guys about some ALCANS that where built to my trucks GVWR, but I had a set of springs that where sacking out so bad that they where about to smack the frame, and they needed replacing soon. The lead time was a little too long, so I bought a set of 8" Skyjackers that are still only giving me 7" of lift.

Hey @Stephen while we are all in here.....anything that can be done about a truck that leans pretty bad? You helped get me squared away with some NOS ORD springs from a guy on here a couple of years ago. Did a 64" swap in the back and ORD stock length up front of a Suburban.

You helped me figure out the springs were:
48.5" long
10 leaves at .26" thick
1.5" eye width and both ends military wrapped
4" lift

I believe that you said they were a little heavier than you would wanted to start with for the Suburban, but they actually ride great. I have dual batteries on the side that's leaning. Truck has 1" pucks and new body mount rubber. No rust. I have 500-1000 miles or so on the springs and no trail time. I have flexed them a bit to get driveshaft measurements, but nothing more. The lean was apparent after the spring install but has worsened over the last year. I have your zero rates and need to use both, otherwise would just throw one in to address the difference. The lean did not change when doing the rear spring swap.

I understand that good suspension flexes, but I can't go anywhere without a comment from someone about the lean. I have not confirmed the difference on frame to axle for each side but a slight jack on the front left and it levels out. Is there a single leaf that I can order to add/replace one of these to get it back level? Something else I should check to confirm?

Thanks for all the help. Very happy with all the ORD parts on the truck.

One option is doubling up on a leaf on the low side. This picks it up by the thickness of the leaf and adds to the spring rate which makes it compress less to get to ride height. A swaybar may fix it if you want the bar for roll control. It's usually pretty inconvenient to pull leaves but if you have them out for any reason you can see if one is a little shorter arch and put them on the appropriate sides to help level it. The narrow spring mounting width on the front of the squares is not ideal for these problems, any little height change is amplified when the springs are so close together.

@Stephen how about a 850lb plow only on when snow needs plowed :pimp: yes i know you can. :deal:

Snowplows are terrible. Do you want it to work right when it's off, on and up or on and down? And you're going to add 50% to your sprung weight when you're hauling it compared to just the truck? Awesome. Variable loads on relatively light trucks are pretty ridiculous to work with until you look at air bags or some other auxillary load carrying thing and then it all comes together. Even just a bumpstop extension with a big rubbery thing of some sort would be a good idea. Timbren stuff comes to mind. Run it in the winter, take it off in the summer?

I had a friend in Colorado who did landscaping during the non snow months. Plowed during snow. They put air shocks on the front of the trucks as part of the seasonal plow install. Compressor was left on the truck for airing up lawn equipment tires.

oh i got you stephen . . . i was just picking was all to prove you guys can even figure this stuff out .

i did stock style tapered leaf replacements but 4 leaf pack aftermarket . she rides good and hauls the plow good . plus i run around 500 lbs of extra weight in the back of the truck to off set the plow up front . lots of snow plow people forgot this but it helps a TON !

The off-the-shelf leaf springs are made to keep everyone satisfied. They don't do anything well, but they sit level and ship fast.
My truck leans, did with the 4" HD TC and got really bad with the 4" ORD springs up front. The common denominator? No sway bar
Also, my ORD springs came new but second hand, which means their weight set up is wrong for my truck. Again, not ORD/Alcan fault.
I also have mismatched rear 56s, that have an extra leaf added and have been re-arched differently to handle the weight in the back.
So there's a lot of things going on that would mess with a par of 52" super soft ORD springs up front. I saved some money buying pre-owned, it's not perfect but she rides smooth and straight but definitely soft.

No need to call anyone out but the last time I heard a negative post on CK5 about the ORD Alcans was someone going to 52s up front and running into all the issues with that swap AFTER they ordered the springs and installed them.
I just don't think he was ready, might not have been what he wanted, and struggled to make it work after. It wasn't mean or argumentative AT ALL, it was just something we had to get through.

All of these posts have me excited to get to try out my truck with the ORD/Alcans. Have all four installed, but one front was accidentally built too long. Hoping I get it going soon. I need the truck for work and have a nice road trip planned too...fingers crossed.

We need to see video of jumps with a minimum of 2 feet of air under the tires so we know you tested them well. :deal:

Nice!! Unfortunately, I also use my truck for work and chores. Airing it out just isn’t in the cards.

Looks like a good time though!
