Allison into a smallblock????

Yup lol, my buddies rebuilding them in heavy equip class and he said i should buy an old on so he could rebuild it for me lol. Just kinda bsing with the idea, wondered if its ever been done. I mean come on they do put them in tanks lol.

I don't know much about the Allison transmission but they do come factory in large GM trucks so it shouldn't be a problem. I have access to a couple older C6500 rider trucks that have the 454/Allison combo. The trucks have been used for plow trucks for the past few years and they should be phasing them out next year. If I can pick one up cheap enough the engine/trans. combo would be a good base to start with.

But anything about a small block?? I know they have been in the big blocks, and my boss has the 6 speed in his 2010 3/4 ton gasser. But thats a vortec and i think they are different than a small block setup correct??

I've seen a couple behind Ford small blocks. The biggest problem is they are not designed to accept any transfer case. You would have to run a divorced Tcase. Even if it was possible it would be a sub par mod. There is no aftermarket support for any of those old Allisons, for all intents and purposes, a TH400 or 700R4 is probably a better transmission.

If it bolts to a big block it will bolt to a small block. Computer is going to be the biggest issue.

If your boss has a gas engine he doesn't have an Allison. Probably the 6L80E or 90E

Ahh i was thinking more along the lines of one out of a duramax lol. Me and my buddy were just thinking about it. WOuld be cool to have one of the new 6 speeds lol.

Sorry if I get the facts incorrect.

The original Allison 1000s didn't have a park pawl, OD or TCC and were all mechanical.

The GM versions added the above and a computer

The bell housing on the LS engines are the same as the older BBC/SBC but the crankshaft flange is different. I think theres an adapter needed for correct torque converter spacing.

ok i guess more or less im talkin putting a newer 6 speed tranny out of a newer 3/4 ton HD truck 4x4 with t-case. Just wondering for $hits and giggles not really thinkin doing it, just the fact that it could be done or not.

The Allison also uses a 29 spline output (bigger than the 32 spline) and there aren't many t-cases that work with that. It can be done, and we have the parts for the most part, just realize that its an issue

Does anyone know if GM is still making the 8.1 with an Allison trans

it was a sad day for everyone when GM shut down there last big block factory line of engines..............a moment of silence for the 8.1 lol

We had a few Alison tranny's at the junkyard, that were in school busses, with 350 V8's,and a few with 366/427 tall block engines, that would bolt up to any older GM bell housing..I think they were late 80's models, probably C-60's ...too bad they never offered one for 4wd use,or had a transfer case that accepted the larger input shaft,it would be a bullet proof off road or towing tranny!...

Had an Allison in my 04 2500HD, absolutely loved that trans for towing and hauling. It was behind an 8.1 and it was 4x4. One of those would be overkill for the engine you intend to put in and would prob sap any power gain out of it, sure would kill mileage too. The new 6 speed auto would most likely be way expensive to swap in, but I don't know. Keep your 700R4 and rebuild properly when it's time.

We have a medium duty 83(?) GMC that we have a scissor bed on with an old Allison with no park pawl (I've mentioned this a few places when line locks come up, this truck legally has a ball valve for this reason). It has a 6.2 in it, so there must be a bellhousing that would work for an sbc and I guarantee that truck doesn't have anything resembling a computer. It's an awesome tranny but there's no way I'd go through the effort to run one of those over a th400. It's governed at 55 and has no OD, and I'd bet the strength is irrelevant over a 400 in this case.

I understand the want to be different, but for the cost of doing something like that you could have a few built 400's thats all i'm sayin
