Ive got an opportunity to swap the automatic trans in my '98 12 valve out with a 2001 6 speed. Im curious what the differences might be between the 2001 24 valve HO and my '98 12 valve as it pertains to the trans.

Any thoughts?

thanks for the links guys, I just didnt want to have to go through the hassle of searching other forums (ie. registering to look at info)

I sure someone on here knows a thing or two.... cough...rjfguitar...cough

You've got 47RE and you want to put in a NV5600. not really a problem. you need the whole clutch assembly, peddle and steering column to make it look factory.

1st check your current tranny crossmember. if its the wide one (IE a foot wide with 2 different bolt patterns on it. you don't have to change it. the 5600 will use the rear most pattern. if you have the skinny crossmember you will have to change it.

the nv5600 has a 1 1/2" 29 spline output, I can't recall what the automatics are. you may have to find the correct input for the tcase. or get the tcase with the 5600.

the 5600 uses a 13" clutch. you have to get the correct flywheel for the 13" clutch. you might need a 3/4" spacer under the starter. I can't recall the reason right off the top of my head for that. but you might need it.

the NV5600 came with 2 different input shafts. the early 5600 was a 1 1/4" with 12 spline the "factory update" was 1 3/8" 10 spline input. 99-2000ish was the early 5600. you don't want one of those. you want the 1 3/8" 10 spline input. make sure that's what it is. if its the small one. you dont want it. because you get to choose right now, make sure its the big input to save any hassle/breakage in the future.

nice, thanks for the info. Im actually going to buy the entire truck, park them side by side in my shop, and start making one look like the other. Ill be swapping in the tcase as well. my curiosity was if the bell housings/ engine electronics would need to change.

you are laughing with the whole truck for swap parts. call it a bolt in procedure.

no engine wiring will change. can't recall where the reverse lights get their signal offhand. minor though. bellhousing patterens are the same. you won't have to swap the flywheel housing.

now i remember why there was a 3/4" spacer for the starter in my head. if you use a flywheel for a nv4500 and redrill it for a 13" nv5600 clutch, you need the 3.4" spacer for the starter. if you use the correct nv5600 flywheel. you don't need any spacer.
