alternator upgrades?

more than one serpentine belt. Probably in the same configuration as v-belt but serpentine.

Mine's a serpentine alt/crank/waterpump with the PS pump on a v-belt. No idler pulleys to fail as in full serpentine setups, and still the grip needed when the load on the belt gets high.

Mine came off an '85 Monte SS, but they were pretty common.

If that won't link doesn't work:

I think if I really wanted to play around with finding them, I could have had the alternator/water pump/crank pulleys on the serpentine belt (there is a name for them, micro-groove or something since its not really serpentine), and the PS/crank/water pump pulley all on a v-belt as a failsafe. But the pulley's didn't come from the same vehicle, so they wouldn't line up as it's shown.

if you have full serp with the little cs-130 then get a 96-up c/k truck optional alt thats rated for 120-125 ish. direct plug in for wires. and only mod to bolt in is tinny bolt hole needs be bigger and shifted a tiny bit when making bigger.

Do you know if this would work on a big block?

I just bought semi-serp pulleys for my big block

you only need the crank, water pump and alternator pulleys
all other components ( brackets, PS & AC v-belt pulleys ) will work

you can find them on late 80s big blocks
mine were from a 1986 suburban 454 motor

and please use a set from the same BBC motor and don't try to
mix & match different sets ( SBC pulleys will fit but they won't line-up together )

ask me how I know that

I had the same problem on my 81 Chevy. At low speed and at idle with the headlights , engine, wipers, and heater running the volt meter would read 10 volts. If I sped-up to 30mph it would read 13.6 volts. I upgraded to a CS-144 ( one of the other forums thoroughly discusses this and other high amp options ). I ordered mine at the junk yard for a 95 Cadilac with heated windows ( I used one of the GM part numbers listed in theforum ). I paid $ 65.00 at the junk yard, then brought it to a alternator rebuilder who checked the output and put in new brushes and bearings ($15) and changed the surpentine pully to a single V belt. I had to notch and space the alt bracket 1/2" higher and cut the adjusting arm slot a little wider. Napa carried the adaptor plug with the built-in resistor. Now the voltmeter varies between 13 - 13.6 volts ( high load to no load ) at idle.
According to the literature about the CS alternators the 144 model puts out more amps at lower rpm ( if needed ). I am a happy camper again!

Yeah, search for *any* alternator post by me or RootBreaker and you'll find lengthy threads on this very topic.

yeah and more to come!!!!!!!!
I actually threw out my old pontiac trans sport alt..... think it was bad..

bought another from an online junkyard... for $45 shipped to my door.... they offered 30 day warranty so I expect it works... still havent used it..

I also have the normal plug without the resistor ($6 from autozone) and the $25 ac delco one with resistor... so I will get back to trying it...

however since my truck does not have any wiring in it.... think the alt upgrade will be last..... well second to last....

first all new wiring going in with the ezwiring 21 kit
then fire truck up.. if runs... upgrade alt...
then headlight relay upgrade.... so will be a while before I post back about my alt upgrade status.... :haha:

cool thanks dude

that info was a quick google.... I rememered mine was AC Delco... and the 12102921 was on it.. I just verified...

here it is.. bought mine locally from a speed shop...

I couldn't find that GM piece when I was looking for mine a couple months back, it almost appears that it's been discontinued.

Couldn't get the Napa piece either. Dunno what was going on, nobody could find the numbers even via crossreferencing.

you can order it from that link... :wink1:

No I mean from GM...they may still be in stock in places, but if GM dealers aren't listing them, whatever anyone has in stock now, may be all there is.

Dunno, I probably got info from many of the links others did, and thats where those numbers came from. Only place that could get something for me locally (needed it quickly) was Carquest.

How i missed this I don't know. But thanks. Looking for some k5's to wheel with when I finish mine. I'm in ukiah.
