Alternator Volts

I know how a wire a house,lights,motors,etc--then I bought a 3 phase compressor!!!:yikes:   --still havent figured that thing out!--its got more wires than I can handle--and I dont like playing with 220V!!.( and I cant run it here anyway,no 3 phase current in on my street!).

Do a google search under "rotary phase converter". You can get 3 phase 220 out of single phase 220

I read my voltage with a multimeter while the alternator was in the truck and the truck was running. It was pretty much the same voltage +/- .05 volts everywhere I tested.

Good deal. I'm lookin at changin some wiring around for better current flow and charging, and I know my 140 wont be too hip to the stock wiring so I figure I'll bypass some of the BS and run a straight charge-back from the alt.

Yes, the 140A alt will fry your stock primary loop. You need to re-do the loop from alternator charging post, to the firewall, back to the battery. Charging strait to the battery can cause some funny current draw situations (I read that is wasn't the answer when I did mine). Just run at least 4 ga wire (if you keep it under 8 feet) or go strait to 2 ga. I am running the pontiac 140A alt and it cooked my primary loop the first time I used my winch (jsut to stretch the cable). Not a problem since.

What if I just ran the charge back from the alt. straight to the battery and bigger gauge wire on from firewall post to the exciter/gauge pigtail then 4 ga from the battery to the starter?

Think I still need to route it thru the starter?

My electrical skills could fill a shot glass. But I do know I need bigger wire :D

Avoid the starter routing method. It is evil :deal: . I run a starter wire down there, and that is just for the starter. Then I re-did the primary loop as I described above (possily in overkilll, or at least voltage redundancy). It was reccomended that I use the original routing to the firewall junction block, back to the battery method to avoid any charging issues. It has worked fine so fat.

Ok, yeh thats how I planned on routin it. Tomorrow I'll be doin my steering so saturday I'll knock this out.

So the exciter in the alt. pigtail runs to the firewall block eh?. IIRC the truck gets power to the cab from a wire on runnin from the starter, should I upgrade that as well? Grr..I should just pull out my book and look at a diagram :D

PO did some funky wiring, had a big camper plug in the bed of the truck so Ive done some removal since then. I'll hafta strip back the wire looms and see what goes where before I start.

dont mean to hijack , but i want to put a 140a alt. in my truck, its an 89, do i still need to worry about frying the primary? where's a good place to get a 140a unit to fit my truck? its got the serp. belt. i noticed in the specs page on here that the 91 model got the 100a CS130 alt standard. does this unit drop right in? thanks.

Any time you upgrade to anythin over 100amp you should put in bigger wiring.

If you buy one let me know, I pulled a serp. belt pulley off the alt I have so I have no use for it. Yes it should drop right in unless is a "big case" type alt. Should be a direct fit for your truck. I know mine would be, minus the bigger gauge wire.
