The alternator in my ford died today and Im pretty sure I can get a used one from a yard for a little over $20. They have a price sheet and any altenator is the same price, whether it be a 98 chevy 1500 100A or a 82 chevy 60A, theyre all the same price... If they have one.

Or do I bother buying a reman? Ive had nothing but bad luck with reman junk in the past. This is all on DD type vehicles too, never any sort of extreme use.

Or a New one from Napa is $135 for a 75A which seems to be the highest amperage rating for the old ford stuff. Not a bad price either, just a little more than I can afford at the moment.

Opinions? What do you guys think?

If you can get a used one cheap enough and easy to change OD go for it. Usually when one of mine goes out ill buy a reman just for convince, and save the receipt

Check with Auto-Zone. Lifetime warranty if it does go. You'll never have to pay for one again. Just a thought.

I used to work at a Bumper to Bumper in high school, and I swear every reman, I think three of them, I put in my 89 K2500 had bearing noise problems, and didnt have correct output at idle.

Might be worth a shot now with a different brand.

Yeah remans are still hit or miss from any company. Sucks bit it shows how quality control has gone down from all.suppliers.

Sometimes the new ones aren't much more money and they come with a lifetime replacement.

Ideally I have a local alternator and starter shop build me what I need with the core.

On the chevy 10.si's I have a box of them and I just use the used ones till they fail.

I've always had good luck with used altenators from a boneyard..often better than a rebuilt from a discount parts store...some I've bought at boneyards looked like they had been installed recently and a few even had the tags still on them!...I'd rather pay 20 bucks than 150 ,they dont go bad all that often--sitting can ruin an altenator though,so look for one thats "fresh" looking and hasn't been left out to the weather for years..yards here toss them in truck bodies or an old bus,and you have to paw thru them,or pull them off yourself..

I love cheap fixes

Turns out one of the power wires to the alternator shorted out on the EGR tube and blew the fuseable link. I spliced it back together and good as new now.

Autozone-lifetime warranty. I have 38 pages of **** on warranty there. Once your there and they get to know you they start cutting the price down. Also go with the 'reward points' 5 points is $20 free on ANYTHING! Spend $20 to get 1 point. But you can get only one point in 24 hours. Basically if you spend $100 you get $120 worth of ****!
