Aluminum radiator?

If you do your homework and research the use of aluminum radiators for 4x4 trucks, you may conclude as I have that they are more problematic.

Can you give me ideas where to search, what to search for, or links. I searched and didn't find much. Probable used the wrong words or searched in the wrong places.:doah:

Thanks,
Mike

My friend has had his Ron Davis radiator in his S-10 for 7 years now. No problems, and he uses Dex-Cool. The other 2 vehicles have 3 and 1 year respectively on their RD aluminum radiators. Both are running Zerex low-silicate green antifreeze, and both look like new inside. If they corroded through a tube I would suspect the wrong coolant or that they didn't use distilled water...

I have used a aluminum radiator from dana racing supply,

200 bucks cooled my big block

I don't have the internet locations for the info I read. But here is what I remember. The articles I read talked about aluminum radiators being more succeptable to acid corrosion. It was recommended to use only steam distilled water. There is some question as to whether de-ionized water is slightly corrosive. Never use tap water. Use Dex Cool extended life coolant. That glob of gue that forms around the cap is not a problem, that's the good stuff.
Alum rads also have issues with electrolosys. Small voltage levels that are present in the coolant that also create corrosion. Alum rads must be mounted with rubber. The rad must not have any metal connection to ground (such as the core support).
I talked to my 2 buddies that had failures with the Ron Davis alum rads. One had used green Prestone coolant. The other had used metal mounts to attach the rad to the core support.
Several members here are having success with the alum rads. Looks like if you follow the recommended procedures, the alum rad will last.
I'm assuming you already know about the 2 different height options for the top rad mounts for the '86. My truck is also an '86 & I did that change on the first rad swap. Taller rad & shroud.
I agree with one of the other members here about the heavy duty fan clutch. They work.
