Am I asking to much out of my 700r4?

I have an '86 Suburban, It's running a pretty close to stock 454 (very mild RV cam) so it may be pushing 230hp still. Maybe slightly more, but not much. It has a 4" lift and some 35's, but I have regeared the axles to 4.56's. The truck it self is just a 1500, it has an older 44 front and a 12 bolt rear (swapped in) I keep burning up second gear in the 700r4's, I have been through two. The one that was fist in the truck when I got it, lasted a few years. Some towing, and some mild off road stuff, but generally DD type duties. The second one, I bought off of Craig's list for 300, it was supposed to be rebuilt after about a month the same problem showed up. Lesson learned, like everything else you get what you pay for. I wanted to make this rig kind of "a jack of all trades". I have a third 700r4 that I took out of a running and driving K-5, I know it's good. Am I asking to much out of a 700r4? Would putting in the third transmission be just asking for problems? :dunno:

Doesn't sound too horrible to me, I've been through 2 used units, other than the original that lasted 245k miles, the 2nd used unit was borrowed, and still did fine when returned to the friend borrowed from. Got tired of messing around, so I took the original to a highly recommended trans rebuilder, did an awesome job, cost @ $850 and included better components, cooler cleaner and a new TV cable.

I'd personally say you're asking too much for a 12 bolt rear to last long behind the truck weight and big block power :D

NEED to make sure though, that when installing these used 700's, that the TV cable is properly adjusted for the correct setting.. :D (few will get this)

Have it set to where the line pressure is too low and it'll burn them up real quick.

Thanks man, I have asked around here the best quote I got was 1100 for the rebuild. (that did not include the new torque converter) They were just gonna flush mine. That didn't sound right to me. I was looking on line and the Monster trans was 1200. . . for a new one. . . .I have a semi float 14 bolt that I am going to put under it to keep my 6 lug pattern.

"best quote" is your issue.. going cheap or junkyard is foolish imo on a 700..

go get a nice BTO and be done with it...

I know whats goin' in the buggy....

:haha:

thus the reason I'm going RMVB..... :deal:
Yeah reverse manual valve body is the way to go if you know how to drive one.
Your tranny will last much longer, it will always be in the gear you want it to, and it's like driving a motorcycle, quick shifts.
:waytogo:

I ran a couple hotrods in my early days with em... it's a bit tougher on the pump, but if you build accordingly it's pretty bulletproof, for a slushbox anyway... ;)

Yeah but the clutches will last longer.:thumb:
Just like me shifting on the fly my big rig, it preserves the clutch, it might be hard on the gears if you grind it, but the clutch will outlive the tranny.:pimp:

I only paid $850 for mine, TQ included, because I did the removal and install, they just did the bench build for me.

I tried to go a cheap way, different shop,, $400 (bench rebuild) it would quit working in a matter of a few hours, they rebuilt it twice, they even fiddled with the setting of the TV cable and could not get anything to change.. finally after the second time I took to this other guy, once he had it apart, he showed me what the other place didn't do and didn't clean or replace.

So I guess you could technically say I spent $1250 for it,,, :doah:

I was not trying to go cheap. I am willing top pay the money to have my truck reliable, I just don't want to get ripped off. I will look in to the BTO. :eek1: Anybody had any expierance with the Monster Transmissions?

I've read a couple questionable things about Monster, but no firsthand experience....

Also, make sure you've got a big ol' tranny fluid cooler in addition to your radiator. ;)

Monster has "Monster in a box" rebuild kits that you can take a rebuilder if you don't wanna buy the fully tranny or save on shipping (its what i'm leaning towards when I rebuild my th350). Heard lots of good things about BTO as well.

I'm interested to see which way you go as well. On a related note, TCI is selling a 6 speed based on the 700/4l80 (i'm sure it's only about 4 or 5 times a much money)
