And if I do this with the TV cable what happens?

SO the burban i just picked up the guy had said he adjusted the TV cable himself since he got it back from the tranny shop. 1. dont ask why he thought the tv cable was wrong from the tranny shop. 2 I dont know what shifting problems if any he had prior to adjusting it.

Either way when I got it it would shift way too low in rpms and way to fast even at a near WOT.

So I went and adjusted it per the instructions here.

WOW 100 times better It appears to have self adjust itself out a bit further then he had it.

My question is this
It still seems like it could shift just a bit higher for stock. If I brought the cable adjuster out does that raise the rpm shift points? and I am talking like maybe a click or two.

Suggestions?
 
At what speed is it shifting? Im pretty sure 15mph should be the 1-2 shift.
 
right now it is set "by the book"

Shift points would be relative to throttle position. Also if the speedo is off due to larger tires that can through shoft points off so 15mpg is not a good standard to go by.

1991 Suburban 1500 5.7 TBI, 700R4, 241C, 3.42 gears with 32" ATs

No speedo regear. (maybe next step is to get speedo corrected) This is just by swapping out the plastic gear in the T case isnt it? Thats how you do it in a 231 Jeep t-case anyways.

Speedometer does not use a gear for 90/91, it's the DRAC, located under dash near the ashtray I think. White plastic rectangle. Very easy to correct for gear ratio/tire changes, the threads/links are on this board on how to do it.
 
Yep, talk with SweetK30. He modifies and sells DRAC units for a VERY cheap price - $25, if I remember right. I bought one from him, and it works flawlessly to fix your speedometer. Plus, you can then change it as necessary in the future w/ tire/gear changes.

I also have a 700r4, and don't like the shift points on it. I've heard this can be modified, but for me, it is what it is. I don't want to mess with it and screw it up. I end up using the column shifter every so often to force shift things if I need it different for some reason.

in the Jeep 231 T case tailshaft housing is the speedo gear either for cable or sensor. you just change that out to proper teeth count and your done.

As for shift points. on my 96 Cherokee when I regeared to 4.56s and still had 31s for a bit the shifts point were WAY out of wack becuase it thought it was doing X when I was really doing Y. Once i installed the right gear the shift points went back to there normal spots as if I had stock gears and tires.

Keep in mind my Cherokee was a 96 so it was OBDII and had a AW4 tranny.
 
Yes, transmission shifts in these trucks are not computer controlled (except 4L80E). Governor still controls shift timing (not sure how much TV plays in that, probably a bit, just like the modulator on older trans), and it's pretty obvious driving a CUCV for instance, vs. a civilian K5 that the shift points varied widely based on application.

I never got around to messing with one, but the governor is a pretty simple assembly. Adding or subtracting weight changes the shift RPM.
 
The TV cable should be set by the book. You can maybe go 1 click tighter if you want, but it may adjust out again upon heavy throttle application. Looser puts the tranny at risk. If you want the shift points higher, the governor is where to put your attention. The transmission doesn't know how fast you are going, so shift points are not related to MPH. It only knows the throttle position and how fast the driveshaft is going. If you have the wrong differential gear ratio for your tire size, it will magnify shift point errors.

If you want the shift points higher, you need less weight on the governor. You can grind them smaller. Just make sure you don't have a diesel governor to start with or the shifting will be way low. The Camaro and Corvette units have no weights added to the governor cage, so it can end up faster starting with one of those and just adding a little weight.
 
Yeah I am just going to leave it until I get it regeared and then reexamine the situation.

Its at Book so it stays at book for now.
 
You can move the cable housing back, towards the firewall a few clicks, it'll raise the shifts up a bit and firm them up as well. This is a higher pressure setting I was told, higher pressure is better than too low.
