And it continues build thread. Dead.. sent to the scrapyard

Just an fyi for all the midwest guys Greatlakes4x4.com is great for finding parts cheap. They have a huge classified section. Way better than dealing with craiglist. picked up the 14ff 4.10 open for 100 bucks

Cool Jess, glad you finally located one!
What kind of work does it need?

Nice a lincoln locker....and Kerts' brackets rock!

I look forward to the install Jess. What did it have before, a SF?

good choice I think too Jess, a little more insurance never hurts.

pulled both covers on the 14 and the 60 matching 4.10's. :) Anyways the 14 was def sitting outside for awhile. Drained alot of water and gear oil out of it. Came out brown. Looks like new seals and bearings are in order. The D60 was nice black 80-90 :)

That sucks Jess, are the tubes rusty inside?

Mine had heavy rust inside from sitting so long. A trip to the acid dipper made the housing like new.

How do the bearings feel? If the bearings feel good I would just change the pinion and hub seals and run it after cleaning it out.

Bearings feel alright no slop or grinding. I may just clean em up.

This weekend I spent a bunch of time in the truck looking at various k5s for my dad.

We almost bought the red one for 6500 but decided to see what else is out there.

Grey one had a bunch of rust bubbles, and had 200k on the motor so we passed on that one

Red one had 84k on motor, 100% restored on outside, but inside was trashed.

So on wednesday we will hopefully be driving to pa to look at this beige one.

Then I spent most of the weekend doing this :)

I did find time to clean up the 14 a bit more. Got the shock tabs torched off and the hubs and the drums pulled. Does anyone know where to pick up a breather vent for these things. Mine is busted off.

You'll find one you like, if not it sounds like you would be happy to go buy the red one if you liked it.

As for the breather vent, while you got it apart, I would tap the hole for a pipe 1/8 NPT thread and just screw a 5/16" brass hose barb in there.

Great idea, It will double as a fill as well if I can't get the fill plug out.

I've done that before too, works great especially if you have an empty housing to work with, if not use grease or vaseline on the bit to collect metal shavings, and clean the bit off, and regrease frequently to get all the chips.

What are we cooking?

Well we will probably talk him down a bit, but it already has the lift and tires. He will ditch the rims and the crapy 1/2 tons and will be getting my old 3/4 ton stuff. Basically we want a SOLID truck to start with, it will be a dune, and very mild trail runner. If we went with the red one for 6500 we would have to get a lift, tires etc and that would put us way over 7grand anyways. There will be plenty of things done to it once we do get it though so don't worry.
