And it continues build thread. Dead.. sent to the scrapyard

Hey Jess, I like Dads' K5....nice truck!

Where did you get the info on shift rail grinding?

What 203 are you using?....While you was here, I didn't even think about measurements off my doubler that you was looking for...you must have got them?

Shift rail grinding was here and pirate.

I ended up buying a doubler from nwf rather than machining one myself.

I am using a 27spline 203 from behind a th350. I am using a 10 spline 205.

OK, I got another 350/203 combo (trans has a broken case, but supposedly rebuilt internals) if you need some parts. Also have a couple T350 units sitting on the bench.
I have a 205 figure 8 from a 350 as well, but that needs some work, I robbed a few parts from it to get rid of my syncro stuff in my round 205.

Haha ok man, I dont quite understand what doubler means. Can you explain lol.

To have a wider range of gears to choose from, and achieve an even lower "crawl ratio", companies have started making adapters to put two transfer cases together, thus doubling your low range gear reduction. ORD makes this kit: http://offroaddesign.com/catalog/doubler.htm

Most run a NP203 rangebox (not the chain-driven part) mated to a complete NP205 if I understand it correctly.

Yes you are correct. The 205 is an all gear case and the reduction box part of the 203 is all gear as well. No chains to stretch. I got my kit from www.northwestfab.com look on their site under the tech and go to doubler and you can see it a little bit better.

Ahh ok I understand now lol. I dont need one haha. Speaking of chain stretch jess, i just posted a pic on my thread of my tcase I split last night, does it look stretched, or is that normal? Idk much about them.

Well I'll have to take a look in a min. Found out why my doubler wasn't shifting correctly. The splines on the billet shaft are too snug on the shift collar. Only allowing direct and neutral. Doubler peeps that collar should easily slide or am I wrong? I did pick up the exhaust for my dads k5 from heath, and we gave her a tune up. New plugs, wires, cap, rotor. Runs a ton better, can't wait till the headers and the exhaust goes on..

Yeah Jess, it should slide easily by hand, with the teeth lined up.

So did you call them today and to ask about the spline fit? I say it's not something you want to mess with, becuase if it's isn't correct it could put all the torque one only a couple teeth or something. But yet it is supposed to fit smoothly. I would want them to send me a new shaft. I figured you would find the problem pretty quick.

just got off the phone with them. They said they make there shafts to spec off of new shift collars. They suggested i take the old shift collar and grind it or file it down to match. If its not just a burr i am going to have them send me a new one.

This is the kinda stuff that sucks Jess. I got a 1410 yoke that was like that, but it was a bad piece. It didn't fit the 32 spline front output, and the other one I had did, so back it went and I bought a replacement.quote=jekquistk5;2904750]just got off the phone with them. Well hopefully they dont make him pay for shipping like they did on your shock lol.

How does your shift collar look? Does it look all wore or mushroomed out or anything, or does it look pretty good? I am sure you will get it taken care of.

Nope its not mushroomed, it slides real nice on the old gears. I'm sure its the new shaft. I am going to see what I can do tonight, I just have to figure out the best way. I really do not want to ruin a 200 dollar billet shaft. I'm thinking the air file might be my best bet. Its gonna be a very slow and painful process due to the hardend steel.

I would either get a new shaft or a new collar. But I wouldn't file on the splines. I could see if it was 1 or 2 splines that needed to be clearanced, or if it was just the tips of the splines.

Also, is the new shaft case hardened or through hardened? If it is hard enough a file won't work anyway, you may just dull it.

I'm not sure on their process, but I'll find out later, if its not a burr I'm going to get a new shaft. Only thing that sucks is there is a lead time of about 4-6 weeks.

Still haven't had time to see if I can fit the shift collar in. I've been sidetracked with my dads k5. Today I got the old exhaust taken off, and started putting on the headers. Got the passenger side all done, just need to weld the O2 bung in on the drivers side.

Well off to Traverse City I go to scope out wedding venues. Damn this wedding stuff sure is putting a damper on my work on truck time.
