Another broken axle shaft.........

I mean seriously! Who twists off a 3" axleshaft that lives BEHIND a giant planetary.

Ha not from my truck! But I thought you guys would get a kick out of it. It's what I got to work on today.

LOL

Ha I crack me up!

Seriously though, Caterpillar 24H grader. The stub in the diff is mushroomed. Have to pull the tandems, chains, chain case, final drive. Just to fish that stub out.

We dont have any 14's. Just a couple 16s and about 3 dozen 24s H's and M's

Here's the actual stub from in the diff. The 3" od shaft fractured and became a 3 1/4" lol.

Diff lock engaged, articulate body, high traction location, full load....... It's the only possible explanation I can think of. OTHER than rEtaRd operator.

With the diff lock engaged it drove itself all the way out of the mine still.

The stub beside the tandem chains. Size is very deceptive. That's 240 series chain beside a 3" shaft. But you'd almost never know with out a reference.

Looks expensive. What's a repair bill on something like that?

And how bout a reference pic of the equipment?

I have no idea on costs. It's mine equipment, I work for mine maintenance. So there's no real world costs here.

'Sfunny, googling for images of this thing comes up half as the real ones, and half as Tonka and Lego versions :haha:

So there's one axle drive, and the tandems are chain-coupled, on each side? I guess you wouldn't need much slip with the tandems ... I think chain, especially that big, qualifies as the ultimate locker :deal:

There's only 1 diff under it. Really really big diff. But only 1. The axles come out and power the final drive planetary which in the center of the chain case. And the planetary has 2 sprockets on it for the chains. 1 chain to each wheel. There's no suspension, but the chaincase articulates around the final drive. So front tire goes up, rear tire goes down.

The top of the chain case is about 5 1/2' off the ground. I'll try to get one of the whole machine. But its still just a grader. Just the largest grader on the planet.
