I was hoping you guys could take a look at this. To my very novice eye, I am bouncing back forth between the pattern being good to thinking maybe the pinion is just a tad too far away. These are used gears, I was told to pay the closest attention to the coast side. Thanks in advance.

I can't tell you which way to go but it looks like it needs changing
Hopefully someone that knows what they're doing will chime in

I've not set up any gears as of yet but I can tell you the pinion looks too close to the ring gear.

This picture should help. There's also a YouTube video by a guy called jantz76. He goes through each shim and show you what to look for.

See the one you posted is more straight forward to me. This is what is in my book from Randy's ring & pinion image.gifimage.gif

The one in Randy's book leaves me a bit more confused. When I pulled the gears out the backlash was at .019 average after checking it on four different spots. After installing the ARB I got the backlash to .008. Makes me wonder if there was a reason the gears had such a rediculous amount of backlash when I pulled them. The guy I bought it from said he a had Geared Up in Grass Valley set up the gears. From what I understand Geared Up is a very good shop.
