This is the 2nd time that someone else has bent one of these rods. They never push in on the K5 tailgate when pulling up on the latch handle and just want to man handle it with force which ends up bending this rod.... I don't see LMC or anyone else stock these so used part only. LUCKILY I have a spare. Has anyone seen these latch rods being reproduced? This is the rod that goes between the handle and the latch mechanism. If not, I was thinking of having some made. Thoughts?

I'm surprised you can bend that rod without ripping the threads out of the pot metal handle or bending the upper mechanism. Is it hollow?

If you look close, its got a thin spot on the rod where they always bend. I don't think it can pull out any threads since they would have to shear the two bolts holding the latch or the 3 bolts holding the latch mechanism. I've also seen where it bends the latch handle pivot point where the push rod goes into. At least they make new latch handles. Its a horrible design from GM to be honest. When you install new Precision seals there is lots of pressure on the latch points and its never easy to disengage unless you push on the tailgate.

I've had to straighten mine a few times. I think i sleeved it somehow or reinforced it. I need to take it apart and look again.

If I try to bend it back, it snaps in half like mine just did. I know I could probably weld it but it looks to be some kind of pot metal so not sure how difficult that would be. My other thought would be a steel tube with JB weld inside if it can't be welded.

Someone did this on their latch which I thought was a good idea to help strengthen the latch arms so they wont bend.
