Another overheating Q from me, help before I pull the 406!

You said you saw it trickling down from the corner of the intake manifold, there you go! get that intake off clean those old gaskets off, check for any head damage, use a slight film of silicon around each water port, apply new gaskets, another slight film of siliconeon the manifold around the water ports, and slap that thing back together. Under 3 hours easy! /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif /forums/images/graemlins/hack.gif /forums/images/graemlins/weld.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grind.gif /forums/images/graemlins/woot.gif /forums/images/graemlins/woot.gif

I'm, not trying to be rude at all but did you read some of the last posts? /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

We pulled the intake and both heads off, replaced both head gaskets and intake gaskets. An even better job than I did when I built the motor. It still read 215-220 with 80 degree weather and the A/C on low.

Yesterday we finally got the mechanical temp guage installed and I drove it late this morning in 94 degree weather with the A/C blowing full blast. It stayed around 190-195 when moving but started climbing to 200-210 if I sat at a light for more than a min. or two. The elect. guage showed 215. /forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif So the whole time the guage was slowly getting further and further off and was about 15-20 degrees too warm. I do have a small air flow issue when idling still and will solve that with an electric pusher fan.

Sorry I get bored after reading awhile, good luck with that /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

Just cut off the fenders /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif /forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gifthat should allow much more air to reach the motor,in turn, dropping your temp.Wow /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif, i cant beleive you diddnt think of that before. Then,to allow even more cooling, just put some fan blades on some spraypainted black eatons,non-simulock,(special bracketry reqired)and there ya go!!!!!!!! Its ok Bobby, you can thank me later,no problem. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/histerical.gif /forums/images/graemlins/histerical.gif /forums/images/graemlins/histerical.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shame.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yeah, I was thinking about it. Hack the fenders off and remove the doors....hey maybe those spinner wheels would help blow more air in there. /forums/images/graemlins/histerical.gif That would be a good idea because you know...I have one of those extremely common rusted out California trucks and I would be all hardcore then. /forums/images/graemlins/histerical.gif

Um, no. /forums/images/graemlins/shame.gif

What heads are you running? Just a thought, if they are aftermarket, did you drill the steam holes for the 400 since most are made for the more common 350. If not lay the gasket on the head and you will see some small holes that don't correspond to holes in the haed..... I know you had them off and back on, just didn't see any back ground on your oringinal buildup. Also if the heads have been milled much there is a corresponding value that must be milled off the intake manifold to properly seat it, once again, I don't know what you have had done with your heads.
Does it pressure test out ok now that it is reassembled?

they're stock 400 heads. We got it back together and installed a mechanical guage. It now stays around 195-205 with the A/C on.

sounds like you got it handled /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif /forums/images/graemlins/hack.gif /forums/images/graemlins/weld.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grind.gifOh crap!!! time to go back to work.
